Muzammil Ibrahim, once a celebrated supermodel, made his acting debut with the film Dhokha, produced by Mahesh Bhatt and directed by Pooja Bhatt. However, what was meant to be an exciting new chapter in his career turned into a traumatic experience, as he was subjected to verbal abuse and mistreatment by the director, Pooja Bhatt. In a candid interview, Ibrahim opened up about the deep emotional toll the experience took on him, describing how it led to depression, nightmares, and a crisis of confidence. Despite the film’s success and positive reviews, Ibrahim’s behind-the-scenes journey was filled with hardship.

The Dark Side of Stardom: Muzammil Ibrahim’s Difficult Debut Experience

Muzammil Ibrahim’s transition from a top supermodel to an actor was met with high expectations, but his debut film Dhokha became a source of significant emotional and psychological distress. While the film itself received a warm reception and Ibrahim’s performance garnered praise, his on-set experience was far from glamorous. In an emotional interview with Siddharth Kannan, the actor shared the painful realities of working under director Pooja Bhatt, who he claims mistreated him during the production of the film.

Tensions on the Set: An Actor’s Nightmare

Ibrahim’s recount of the Dhokha set revealed a stark contrast to the image of glamour typically associated with Bollywood films. He described the verbal abuse and disrespect he faced at the hands of Pooja Bhatt, which, according to him, was not only demoralizing but psychologically damaging. Ibrahim, who had already established himself as a respected figure in the modeling world, found himself subjected to harsh treatment, leaving him disillusioned and terrified.

“I was called unprofessional during that time by Pooja Bhatt. She had a temperament, an attitude which was very disrespectful for actors. Bhatt saab used to like me a lot because I was a good actor,” Ibrahim recalled, emphasizing that the director’s actions were far from what he had anticipated. At just 20 years old, the actor was thrust into a situation that made him question his decision to enter the film industry. Despite his respectful demeanor, Ibrahim felt betrayed by the hostile environment created by Bhatt, who reportedly engaged in verbal abuse on set.

An Emotional Toll: The Onset of Depression

The actor also shared how the mistreatment turned the filmmaking process into a terrifying experience. Ibrahim, who had been an admired supermodel in India, found himself unable to reconcile with the harsh realities of the film industry. He admitted to suffering from severe emotional distress, including nightmares, anxiety, and feelings of depression.

“I was so scared, I was nightmarish. I was a supermodel in India, respected in a very different way and the way I was treated there… Mahesh Bhatt saab saw what was happening and tried to tell her not to do that as well,” Ibrahim confessed. Despite Mahesh Bhatt’s efforts to mediate the situation, things escalated when the veteran director was not on set. The actor recalled hearing disturbing stories, including one where Pooja Bhatt allegedly stated that actors should behave like dogs and follow orders without question.

The continuous pressure and verbal attacks led to a deep sense of insecurity and fear, causing Ibrahim to doubt his place in the industry. The actor revealed how the experience took a significant toll on his mental health. “I used to have nightmares and used to pray that I survive the whole day,” he said, highlighting the extent of the psychological burden he carried throughout the production.

Choosing to Walk Away: A Turning Point in His Career

The emotional strain was so intense that Ibrahim decided to turn down the offer for Raaz 2, a film that would have followed his debut. He explained that the trauma he had experienced on Dhokha left him too scared to face another set. Ibrahim said that the negative media attention and articles aimed at undermining his career were factors that made him withdraw from further projects at that time.

“I did not want to attach myself to that situation,” Ibrahim explained, underscoring his decision to distance himself from the film industry momentarily. His experience with Dhokha left him with a profound sense of disillusionment, and he needed time to heal from the scars it left.

A Silver Lining: Recognition for His Performance

Despite the traumatic behind-the-scenes experience, Dhokha received positive reviews from critics, particularly praising Ibrahim’s performance. The film, which also starred Tulip Joshi, Anupam Kher, and Gulshan Grover, was well-received for its gripping narrative and strong performances. Ibrahim’s portrayal in the film was seen as a promising start to what could have been a flourishing acting career.

However, the emotional aftermath of the production led to his withdrawal from the industry for a period. Although he was recognized for his acting talent, the psychological toll of the mistreatment during his debut left an indelible mark on his career trajectory.

The Need for Change: A Reflection on Industry Practices

Ibrahim’s candid account of his struggles on the set of Dhokha serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by many actors, particularly newcomers, in an industry that is often unforgiving. His story sheds light on the dark side of the film industry, where power dynamics, mistreatment, and verbal abuse can lead to significant emotional and psychological damage.

The case also brings to the forefront the importance of creating a healthier work environment for all individuals in the entertainment industry. With mental health becoming an increasingly important conversation in global industries, Bollywood must address these issues to ensure that the wellbeing of its talent is prioritized.

Ibrahim’s experience with Pooja Bhatt, although painful, has sparked important conversations about respect, professionalism, and mental health within the Indian film industry. As Bollywood continues to grow, it is vital that it evolves to create safer, more supportive spaces for its talent—especially for those who are just beginning their careers.

Conclusion: A Journey of Resilience

Muzammil Ibrahim’s entry into the film industry may not have unfolded as he had hoped, but his resilience in sharing his experience offers valuable insights into the harsh realities faced by many in Bollywood. Despite the mistreatment he endured, Ibrahim’s strength in moving forward and speaking out against the abuse he suffered reflects the need for industry-wide change. While his time on Dhokha may have been a nightmare, Ibrahim’s courage and openness serve as a testament to his character, and his journey remains a significant chapter in the evolving dialogue around mental health and treatment in the entertainment world.
