Google’s AI Mode: Testing Grounds for the Next Generation of Search

By Shilpa Reddy , 8 June 2025

Google’s AI Mode, launched for millions of users, is reshaping the future of search by serving as an innovation hub for new AI-driven features. Rather than replacing the main search experience, AI Mode acts as a testing ground for cutting-edge tools and insights, with successful features set to migrate to Google’s core Search and AI Overviews. CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted this strategy in a conversation with Lex Fridman, emphasizing AI as an evolving layer of knowledge aggregation that will eventually integrate seamlessly with the traditional search framework. Meanwhile, Google continues to explore monetization opportunities, including testing ads in AI Mode.

AI Mode: A Dynamic Incubator for Search Innovation

Google’s AI Mode has emerged as a sandbox environment where the company experiments with groundbreaking AI features before integrating them into the broader search experience. This strategic initiative aims to ensure that only the most effective, user-friendly enhancements are migrated to the main Search and AI Overviews. By positioning AI Mode as a distinct yet interconnected space, Google is prioritizing innovation without disrupting the established user experience of its core search platform.

The Role of AI as a Contextual Layer

According to Sundar Pichai, AI within Google’s ecosystem is best understood as an advanced layer that enriches the search experience, rather than supplanting it. “It’s giving you context, summary… doing multiple searches, kind of assembling that knowledge in a way so that you can go and consume what you want to,” Pichai explained. This AI layer leverages vast data and search capabilities to generate more personalized and comprehensive results, enhancing how users access information.

Balancing Ads and Organic Experience

While Google is testing ads within AI Mode, Pichai underscored that the immediate focus remains on refining the organic search experience. He described ads as essential commercial information, crucial to connecting businesses with users while sustaining Google’s business model. As AI continues to evolve, Pichai noted that these tools will help refine how ads integrate seamlessly into the AI-driven search landscape, striking a balance between commercial viability and user value.

Two Webs: A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Pichai envisions a dual-layered web experience—one for humans and another for AI agents. This “agentic web” will cater specifically to AI tools and applications, complementing the traditional, human-centric web experience. It signals Google’s recognition of the shifting digital landscape, where AI tools increasingly serve as intermediaries, synthesizing vast information to deliver nuanced insights.

Pathway to Integration: The Migration Strategy

Pichai emphasized that Google’s AI Mode will serve as a proving ground for advanced features that, once refined, will “overflow” to the main Search and AI Overviews. This deliberate, phased approach ensures that the most robust and effective tools enhance the broader search ecosystem, offering users a seamlessly integrated and enriched search experience over time.

As Google continues to push the boundaries of AI in search, AI Mode stands as both an experimental space and a window into the company’s vision for a smarter, more adaptive digital future.
