State Bank of India (SBI), the nation’s largest lender, has paid a substantial dividend of Rs. 8,076.84 crore to the government for the financial year 2024-25, reflecting a strong financial performance. The dividend per share rose to Rs. 15.90 from Rs. 13.70 in the previous year, underscoring SBI’s robust profitability. The bank reported a record net profit of Rs. 70,901 crore, marking a 16 percent increase over the prior fiscal year. This dividend payout highlights SBI’s sustained growth and its critical role in bolstering government revenues amid evolving economic challenges.

SBI’s Dividend Payout: A Significant Contribution to Government Revenues

In a formal ceremony held on Monday, SBI Chairman C S Setty presented a dividend cheque of Rs. 8,076.84 crore to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The event, attended by Financial Services Secretary M Nagaraju and Finance Secretary Ajay Seth, marked a key fiscal milestone for both the bank and the government.

The dividend payment represents an increase from the Rs. 6,959.29 crore disbursed in the previous year, reinforcing SBI’s status as a vital contributor to public finances. The Finance Minister’s office shared the update on X, noting the significant dividend receipt for FY 2024-25.

Enhanced Dividend Per Share Reflects Strong Earnings

SBI declared a dividend of Rs. 15.90 per equity share for FY 2024-25, up from Rs. 13.70 per share last year. This upward revision signals the bank’s confidence in its financial health and continued ability to generate shareholder value.

The increased dividend payout aligns with SBI’s broader strategic objectives of delivering steady returns to its key shareholder—the Government of India—while maintaining capital adequacy to support its lending and growth ambitions.

Record Net Profit Signals Robust Financial Performance

The dividend declaration follows SBI’s announcement of a record net profit of Rs. 70,901 crore for FY 2024-25, marking a 16 percent rise compared to Rs. 61,077 crore in the preceding year. This impressive earnings growth is attributable to improved asset quality, expanding credit portfolio, and prudent risk management.

Such financial strength enables SBI to sustain higher dividend distributions without compromising its operational and regulatory requirements, positioning the bank for continued leadership in India’s banking sector.

Conclusion

SBI’s Rs. 8,076 crore dividend payout to the government encapsulates its exemplary fiscal discipline and strategic execution amid a dynamic economic landscape. The bank’s robust profit growth and enhanced shareholder returns affirm its pivotal role in supporting government finances and the broader economy. As SBI continues to navigate evolving market conditions, its financial resilience remains a cornerstone of India’s banking system.
