IREDA Secures Rs 2,000 Crore Through Oversubscribed QIP, Strengthening India’s Renewable Energy Sector

State-owned Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) has successfully raised over Rs 2,000 crore through a qualified institutions placement (QIP) that closed on June 10. The QIP, which was oversubscribed 1.34 times, saw strong participation from both domestic and international institutional investors, including insurance companies, commercial banks, and foreign portfolio investors (FPIs). The capital raised will bolster IREDA’s tier-I capital, enhance its capital adequacy ratio (CAR), and support the company’s growing role in financing India’s renewable energy projects.

IREDA’s Record Fundraise Through QIP

In a significant step to support India’s renewable energy goals, IREDA, the state-owned financier of renewable energy projects, has successfully raised Rs 2,005.90 crore through the issuance of equity shares via a Qualified Institutions Placement (QIP). The issue, which ran from June 5 to June 10, received an overwhelming response, with bids far exceeding the initial base issue size of Rs 1,500 crore, achieving a subscription ratio of 1.34 times. This marks another milestone for IREDA after its successful Initial Public Offering (IPO) in November 2023, underscoring the growing confidence from institutional investors in the company’s operations and mission.

QIP Oversubscribed, Reflecting Investor Confidence

The QIP was designed to raise capital to further strengthen IREDA’s financial position, particularly its tier-I capital and overall capital adequacy ratio (CAR). The issue was priced at Rs 165.14 per share, which includes a premium of Rs 155.14 per share above the face value of Rs 10. The price of Rs 165.14 reflects a 5% discount to the floor price of Rs 173.83 per share, offering institutional investors a competitive entry point.

Notably, the QIP saw robust interest from both domestic and foreign Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs). Among the investors were insurance companies, scheduled commercial banks, and Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs), indicating strong institutional faith in IREDA’s strategy to continue advancing renewable energy projects. This demand surge illustrates the high level of investor optimism surrounding IREDA’s continued growth trajectory and its role in India’s green energy transformation.

Strategic Use of Raised Capital

The capital raised will serve as a crucial boost for IREDA’s operations. As a key player in financing renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in India, the additional funds will enable the agency to expand its financing capabilities. Specifically, the raised funds will strengthen IREDA's tier-I capital, which is vital for bolstering its ability to support high-value renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and energy efficiency initiatives.

Given India’s ambitious renewable energy targets—aiming to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030—IREDA’s expanded financial capacity positions it well to contribute significantly to this national effort. The agency has been instrumental in providing low-cost financing to a variety of renewable projects, supporting the government’s push toward a sustainable energy future.

IREDA’s Role in India’s Renewable Energy Transition

IREDA’s funding activities are directly aligned with India’s renewable energy objectives set by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Over the years, the agency has played a pivotal role in financing projects that drive the growth of clean energy across the country. With rising interest in renewable investments globally, IREDA has seen growing participation from international investors, further strengthening its role in the global clean energy transition.

The successful completion of the QIP strengthens IREDA’s operational foundation, ensuring it remains well-capitalized to meet the growing demand for green financing. As India accelerates its renewable energy expansion, the agency’s contribution is expected to increase, making such fundraising efforts all the more critical to achieving the country’s energy and sustainability goals.

Reaffirming Investor Trust

Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman and Managing Director of IREDA, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the QIP. He noted that the successful completion of the issue, just months after IREDA’s IPO in November 2023, reaffirmed the trust and confidence that both the investor community and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) have placed in the company. This trust is essential, particularly in an era where financial markets are increasingly focused on sustainable investments and projects that contribute to long-term economic and environmental goals.

Conclusion: A Strong Foundation for Future Growth

In conclusion, IREDA’s successful fundraising through its oversubscribed QIP is a testament to the growing institutional confidence in the company and its critical role in the future of India’s renewable energy sector. With increased financial muscle, the agency is better equipped to drive India’s green energy transition, support the scaling up of renewable projects, and contribute to the country’s climate commitments. As IREDA continues to expand its role in financing clean energy, this capital infusion positions it as a cornerstone of India's renewable future.
