Bioenergy: A Strategic Pillar in India’s Energy Policy
In a pointed address at the foundation ceremony of the Indian School for Design of Automobiles, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari outlined a bold roadmap to reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuels. According to the Minister for Road Transport and Highways, bioenergy could fulfill as much as 50% of the nation’s fossil fuel needs within five years—a move he described as both environmentally essential and economically urgent.
With India currently spending approximately Rs. 22 lakh crore annually on fossil fuel imports, such a transition would dramatically improve the country's energy self-sufficiency and balance of payments. "We must work together to protect the environment and fulfill the Prime Minister’s vision of making India a carbon-neutral nation," Gadkari said.
Air Pollution and the Transport Sector
Gadkari highlighted the transport sector as a major contributor to India’s air pollution crisis, accounting for nearly 40% of the country’s emissions due to heavy reliance on petrol and diesel. He noted that air pollution has become one of the most pressing public health issues, and a shift to clean fuels is not optional but inevitable.
He urged automotive manufacturers and research institutions to accelerate innovation in fuel alternatives. "Research in automobile engineering and energy solutions is crucial if we are to meet our ecological goals," he said.
Diverse Alternative Fuels Under Development
India is already experimenting with a diverse mix of alternative fuels. These include ethanol (currently blended at 20% with petrol), biodiesel, methanol, compressed natural gas (CNG), bio-LNG, hydrogen, and electric power. Gadkari praised these developments and emphasized that they will be key to shaping the future of the auto industry.
Ethanol, in particular, has shown promise as a transitional fuel, especially with the rollout of flex engines capable of running on varying ethanol blends. Similarly, investments in hydrogen and electric mobility are beginning to pick up momentum, especially in urban public transport systems.
Automobile Industry: A Driving Force in the Transition
India’s automobile sector remains one of the largest in the world and is central to the country's economic landscape. The industry not only contributes Rs. 3 lakh crore in exports annually but also employs approximately 4.5 crore people, according to Gadkari.
He cited leading domestic manufacturers such as Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor Company, and Hero MotoCorp as examples of Indian brands already playing a global role. “Nearly 50% of their production is exported, which underscores the global competitiveness of Indian automotive engineering,” Gadkari said.
He expressed optimism about the future of the sector, especially as companies begin investing in green technologies. “There is enormous scope for R&D across all segments of the auto industry—from clean fuel engines to sustainable vehicle design,” he added.
