Mercedes-Benz India is preparing for its third price hike in 2025, driven by the sharp depreciation of the Indian rupee against the euro. With a significant portion of its vehicles sourced from Europe, the luxury automaker faces escalating import costs, prompting a phased price increase strategy—each hike capped at 1.5%. However, amid rising input costs, the brand remains confident in its retail outlook, bolstered by interest rate cuts and a shift toward hyper-personalised, boutique showroom experiences. As geopolitical and economic uncertainties persist, Mercedes-Benz is tactically blending pricing prudence with upscale customer engagement to maintain market momentum.
Euro Exchange Volatility Triggers Gradual Price Revisions
Mercedes-Benz India has confirmed a third round of price hikes in 2025, scheduled for September, due to the strengthening euro against the Indian rupee. The euro recently breached the Rs. 98 threshold, reaching Rs. 99—a record high that significantly impacts imported component costs for the German automaker. While the company has localized over 30% of its production, nearly 70% of its content is still sourced from Europe, exposing it to currency-driven cost volatility.
“We priced our cars when one euro was around Rs. 89–90. Now, with the euro near Rs. 99, a price correction is inevitable,” said Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India.
The upcoming 1.5% price hike follows two earlier revisions this year, implemented in January and June respectively, each by the same margin. Iyer emphasized the brand’s phased approach, stating that passing on the full impact at once would be impractical.
Sales Resilience Amid Rising Prices
Despite escalating vehicle prices, Mercedes-Benz India is maintaining an optimistic outlook on retail performance, supported by macroeconomic tailwinds. Notably, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued two interest rate cuts in 2025, and Mercedes-Benz Financial Services has mirrored these reductions to support prospective buyers.
“Approximately 80% of our cars are financed, and though prices have gone up, EMIs remain unchanged due to lower interest rates,” Iyer explained.
He added that sales in May were “excellent” and early indicators suggest June is tracking strong as well. The company is also banking on festive season demand to sustain its sales momentum through the year.
Nonetheless, Iyer acknowledged the broader uncertainties clouding the global landscape: “This isn’t an easy year. Geopolitical and macroeconomic headwinds are real. Hence, we are taking a conservative stance on demand forecasts.”
Mercedes-Benz India is expected to release its official sales performance for Q2 in July.
Boutique Luxury Strategy: The Rise of the Atelier Experience
In tandem with its pricing recalibrations, Mercedes-Benz is intensifying its focus on top-tier customer experiences. The company unveiled its latest ‘Atelier Experience’ showroom in Adyar, Chennai—a premium-format facility offering bespoke vehicle personalisation. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to introduce 30 such experience centers across India in 2025.
“This is the 11th Atelier showroom. Nineteen more are in the pipeline for the next five months,” Iyer noted.
The concept builds on the brand’s existing ultra-luxury spaces, such as the Maybach Lounge in Hyderabad and G-Lounge in Delhi, and extends customisation capabilities to high-end customers. The showrooms feature enhanced infrastructure, immersive digital interfaces, and personalisation zones for exclusive trims and vehicle features.
“Hyper-personalisation is becoming central to the top-end luxury segment. The Atelier Experience is about giving our discerning customers full control over how their vehicles are configured,” said Iyer.
Strategic Shift: From Conventional Dealerships to Luxury Hubs
The company’s long-term vision includes transforming all of its 100 retail touchpoints into the new boutique format. This transition reflects evolving consumer expectations, particularly among high-net-worth individuals investing in ultra-premium models like the Mercedes-Maybach and AMG series.
“Over time, we’ll shift the entire dealership ecosystem to this new experiential model,” Iyer confirmed. The move underlines a broader global trend in luxury automotive retail, where transactional efficiency is augmented by immersive brand experiences.
Conclusion: A Balancing Act Between Costs and Customisation
Mercedes-Benz India’s decision to phase in a third price hike this year highlights the mounting cost pressures faced by luxury automakers operating in volatile currency environments. Yet, through strategic retail finance offerings, a focus on personalised customer engagement, and a network revamp built on boutique experiences, the company is navigating economic headwinds with precision. As the brand braces for uncertain global currents, its blend of conservative forecasting and upscale innovation suggests a disciplined yet dynamic approach to luxury retail in India.
