Under this collaboration, TKM will contribute its technical expertise and system integration capabilities, alongside the supply of hydrogen fuel cell modules. On the other hand, Ohmium International will spearhead the design and development of a prototype for the hydrogen-powered microgrid system. Known for its scalable and modular electrolyzers, Ohmium specializes in green hydrogen production, utilizing proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology.

Speaking to PTI, Swapnesh R. Maru, Deputy Managing Director of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, emphasized the partnership's goal to push the boundaries of hydrogen use beyond transportation. While Toyota has already established itself in the hydrogen-powered vehicle market with its Mirai sedan, the challenge lies in scaling hydrogen fuel technology for wider applications, particularly in rural and off-grid regions.
Maru elaborated, “The feasibility study under this MoU will focus on creating a hydrogen-powered microgrid, combining electrolyzers and fuel cells. Our objective is to develop a prototype and rigorously evaluate its performance under real-world conditions to assess its potential for large-scale deployment.”
Government’s Support for Green Hydrogen
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted the government's commitment to advancing hydrogen as a clean, renewable energy source. With India’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral, hydrogen is seen as a crucial part of the energy matrix that could reshape the country’s energy infrastructure. Gadkari commended both Toyota and Ohmium for their efforts, aligning with the government’s "Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan" (Self-reliant India Campaign), which promotes sustainable, homegrown energy solutions.
