Rupee Strengthens on Trade Optimism and Lower Crude Prices; Equity Markets Show Resilience

The Indian rupee advanced by 16 paise to settle at 85.39 against the US dollar on Friday, buoyed by a softer dollar in global markets and easing crude oil prices. Market participants welcomed the US-Vietnam trade agreement announced by President Donald Trump, fueling hopes for further trade pacts before the critical July 9 deadline. Despite this optimism, lingering tariff uncertainties limit aggressive rupee gains. Meanwhile, domestic equity indices exhibited steady performance, supported by strong services sector growth, which reached a ten-month peak in June, underscoring positive economic momentum amid global headwinds.

Currency Movements and Global Influences

On Friday, the rupee’s appreciation reflected broader trends in Asian currencies, which gained ground amid revived optimism over potential US-led trade agreements. The Indian currency opened the day at 85.44 against the dollar, fluctuated between 85.30 and 85.50 intra-day, and finally closed at 85.39—marking a 16 paise improvement from the previous session.

Forex analysts attributed this positive momentum to the US dollar’s retreat in international markets and the weakening of Brent crude oil prices, which fell by 1.18 percent to USD 67.99 per barrel. The dollar index, measuring the greenback’s strength against a basket of currencies, declined by 0.24 percent to 96.94, exerting downward pressure on the dollar and thereby benefiting the rupee.

Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, noted, “The rupee is poised to gain from a softer dollar and subdued crude prices, though unresolved trade tariff issues could constrain significant upside.” He further forecasted that the USD-INR spot price would likely trade within a range of 85.10 to 85.70 in the near term.

Domestic Market Performance

Parallel to currency gains, India’s equity markets demonstrated resilience amid mixed foreign investor activity. The benchmark BSE Sensex advanced 193.42 points (0.23 percent) to close at 83,432.89, while the Nifty 50 index increased by 55.70 points (0.22 percent) to 25,461.00.

Despite the equity uptick, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) registered a net outflow of Rs 1,481.19 crore on Thursday, signaling cautious investor sentiment amid geopolitical and trade uncertainties. This divergence highlights the complex interplay between domestic growth drivers and external pressures influencing market dynamics.

Services Sector: A Bright Spot

Adding a layer of positive economic momentum, India’s services sector recorded its strongest expansion in ten months during June. According to the HSBC India Services PMI, the seasonally adjusted Business Activity Index rose from 58.8 in May to 60.4 in June, propelled by robust new business orders and sustained international demand.

The sector’s growth underscores ongoing job creation and improving sales trends, signaling resilience in India’s domestic economy despite global uncertainties. This uptick in services activity bodes well for future consumption and investment, supporting broader market optimism.

Outlook and Strategic Considerations

The rupee’s modest gains amid a weakening dollar and subdued crude oil prices reflect a cautiously optimistic market sentiment. However, trade negotiations remain a critical variable, with the looming July 9 deadline for tariff decisions injecting volatility into the currency and equity markets.

India’s ability to navigate these external pressures while capitalizing on strong domestic economic indicators, such as the services sector expansion, will be crucial in maintaining financial stability and growth trajectories. Investors and policymakers alike will be watching the interplay of global trade developments and domestic fundamentals closely in the coming weeks.

Conclusion
Friday’s trading session highlighted the Indian rupee’s sensitivity to international trade developments and commodity price fluctuations, set against a backdrop of solid domestic economic performance. While optimism from US trade deals and easing crude prices provided near-term support, the persistence of tariff uncertainties suggests a cautious approach for market participants. As India prepares for critical trade negotiations and continues to bolster its economic fundamentals, the coming weeks will prove decisive in shaping the trajectory of both its currency and capital markets.
