PIL and Crown LNG Forge Strategic Pact to Expand Pipeline Connectivity for Energy Infrastructure

By Gurleen Bajwa , 18 July 2025

In a move poised to advance India’s energy infrastructure, Pipeline Infrastructure Ltd. (PIL) and Norway’s Crown LNG have entered into a memorandum of understanding to develop enhanced pipeline connectivity and support LNG supply solutions. This strategic collaboration is expected to facilitate seamless transportation of natural gas, bolster energy security, and lay the groundwork for future offshore LNG regasification projects. By leveraging PIL’s extensive pipeline network alongside Crown LNG’s expertise in floating and harsh-environment LNG terminals, the partnership aims to accelerate the availability of cleaner fuel across India, aligning with national objectives to transition toward a more sustainable energy mix.

Deepening India’s Energy Logistics Network

The memorandum of understanding between PIL and Crown LNG signifies an important step in reinforcing India’s natural gas ecosystem. PIL, which operates one of the country’s largest natural gas transmission infrastructures, will explore integrating Crown LNG’s specialized offshore regasification technology with its network. This integration is designed to streamline the movement of LNG from import terminals to end-user markets, reducing logistical bottlenecks and enhancing last-mile connectivity. Such synergy is vital as India seeks to elevate the share of natural gas in its primary energy basket to 15% by 2030.

Leveraging Crown LNG’s Offshore Expertise

Crown LNG, known for its expertise in developing floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) and infrastructure that can withstand harsh marine environments, brings critical technological capabilities to this partnership. These solutions are particularly relevant for India, where land acquisition and coastal regulatory challenges can impede traditional onshore LNG terminal development. Offshore units offer flexibility and scalability, enabling quicker deployment and diversification of LNG import points. Coupled with PIL’s domestic pipeline reach, this model could significantly enhance energy accessibility across industrial corridors and urban centers.

Driving Economic and Environmental Objectives

This collaboration aligns closely with India’s broader agenda of diversifying energy sources to support industrial growth while lowering carbon intensity. Expanding natural gas availability can reduce reliance on more polluting fuels such as coal and liquid hydrocarbons, thereby contributing to cleaner air and progress on climate commitments. Furthermore, improved pipeline connectivity helps stabilize regional fuel prices by ensuring more consistent supply, which benefits power generation, manufacturing, and transport sectors alike.

Outlook: Positioning for a Dynamic Energy Future

The strategic intent captured in this MoU underscores how global partnerships are becoming instrumental in building resilient, future-ready energy infrastructure. For PIL, it represents an opportunity to augment its transmission portfolio with next-generation import solutions. For Crown LNG, it paves the way to tap into one of the world’s fastest-growing LNG markets. As detailed project plans evolve, stakeholders will closely watch how this alliance shapes India’s energy landscape, fostering both economic competitiveness and environmental stewardship.
