Bikaji Foods Posts Modest Q1 Profit Growth Amid Rising Input Costs

By Gurminder Mangat , 26 July 2025

Bikaji Foods International Ltd. reported a 1.3% year-on-year rise in net profit for the first quarter of FY25, reaching Rs. 58.5 crore. The growth, though moderate, reflects resilience in the face of inflationary pressures and a highly competitive FMCG environment. The company's revenue for the quarter also saw a steady uptick, supported by strong demand in its traditional snack segment. However, margin pressures due to elevated input costs and promotional expenses continued to weigh on overall profitability. Despite the subdued profit growth, management remains optimistic about long-term expansion, backed by product diversification and distribution enhancement.

Earnings Snapshot: Revenue Rises, Margins Tighten

Bikaji Foods reported consolidated revenue of Rs. 595.4 crore in Q1 FY25, up from Rs. 528.1 crore in the same quarter last year, registering a growth of over 12.7%. The topline expansion was driven by robust demand for its core product portfolio, including traditional snacks, namkeens, and sweets.

Operating EBITDA came in at Rs. 84.2 crore, representing a 7.2% increase over the previous year. However, the EBITDA margin slipped marginally to 14.1% from 14.8%, reflecting higher raw material costs—particularly for edible oil and packaging—and increased investments in advertising and trade promotions.

Net Profit: Modest Growth Reflects Operating Headwinds

The company posted a net profit of Rs. 58.5 crore, compared to Rs. 57.7 crore in the year-ago quarter, marking a 1.3% rise. While this reflects operational stability, the pace of growth has moderated compared to earlier quarters. The decline in profitability margins, combined with rising distribution and logistics costs, impacted bottom-line expansion.

Despite the challenging cost environment, the company maintained positive earnings, reflecting operational efficiencies and disciplined inventory management.

Segment Performance: Traditional Snacks Lead the Way

The company’s flagship segment—traditional Indian snacks—continued to outperform, contributing significantly to the revenue mix. Namkeen and bhujia remained key volume drivers, with growing penetration in tier-2 and tier-3 markets.

Packaged sweets and frozen products also showed healthy sequential growth, supported by seasonal demand and regional festival promotions. The ethnic ready-to-eat and frozen categories, though still niche, are beginning to gain traction, particularly in export markets.

Strategic Focus: Distribution Expansion and Product Innovation

Bikaji Foods has intensified its focus on distribution network expansion, targeting rural markets and modern retail channels. The quarter saw the onboarding of additional distributors and deeper shelf penetration in high-growth regions.

On the innovation front, the company introduced several limited-edition SKUs and value packs to appeal to price-sensitive consumers. Additionally, digital marketing campaigns and celebrity endorsements helped boost brand visibility and consumer engagement during the quarter.

Outlook: Cautious Optimism with Focus on Efficiency

Looking ahead, the management expects demand momentum to remain steady, particularly in the run-up to the festive season. However, they remain cautious about continued inflation in raw material prices and currency fluctuations, which could impact margins.

To counter these challenges, the company is aiming for improved supply chain optimization, automation in select manufacturing processes, and cost control measures across logistics and packaging. Capex plans for the fiscal year remain intact, focused on capacity expansion and R&D.

Conclusion: Navigating Growth with Discipline

Bikaji Foods’ Q1 performance, while not spectacular, reflects a disciplined approach in navigating an inflationary environment. The modest profit growth underscores both resilience and the need for strategic agility in a fast-evolving FMCG sector. With its strong brand equity, expanding reach, and innovation-led approach, the company remains well-positioned to capitalize on rising demand for ethnic snacks in India and abroad. Long-term investors may view the current phase as a consolidation period ahead of more robust growth in coming quarters.
