AM/NS India Secures License for Steel Slag Aggregate Technology to Boost Sustainable Infrastructure

By Kunal Shrivastav , 28 July 2025

AM/NS India has acquired the licensing rights for a breakthrough steel slag aggregate technology, a strategic move that underscores the company's commitment to sustainable construction and circular economy practices. This innovative solution enables the conversion of steelmaking by-products into value-added construction aggregates, potentially reducing environmental impact while addressing India's growing demand for infrastructure materials. The licensing agreement marks a pivotal step in AM/NS India’s long-term decarbonization roadmap and positions the company to play a central role in greener, resource-efficient development. As infrastructure spending accelerates, the adoption of steel slag technology may redefine material sourcing and environmental compliance in India’s construction sector.

Strategic Move Toward Sustainable Construction

The acquisition of steel slag aggregate technology represents a significant leap forward for AM/NS India in aligning its industrial processes with environmental sustainability goals. By utilizing steel slag—a by-product of steel manufacturing—as a substitute for natural aggregates in road and civil construction, the company aims to reduce dependence on depleting mineral resources such as crushed stone and river sand.

This shift not only aligns with global ESG (environmental, social, and governance) trends but also provides a cost-effective and durable alternative to conventional construction materials. For India, where urbanization and infrastructure demands continue to rise, scalable sustainable solutions like this offer immense economic and environmental value.

Technology Licensing and Implementation Plan

The licensed steel slag technology, originally developed through extensive research in advanced metallurgy and material sciences, allows for the processing and treatment of steel slag into construction-grade aggregate. Under the agreement, AM/NS India will integrate this technology across select facilities, with implementation beginning at its Hazira plant.

By embedding the technology within its existing operations, the company aims to convert a significant portion of its steel slag output into commercially usable aggregates. This will not only reduce landfill volumes but also allow the firm to enter a growing market for industrial waste-derived construction materials.

Environmental and Economic Impacts

From an environmental perspective, this initiative offers a dual benefit: minimizing industrial waste and reducing the ecological footprint associated with mining natural aggregates. Estimates suggest that each tonne of steel slag aggregate reused can help avoid roughly 1.6 tonnes of natural aggregate mining, thereby preserving ecological systems and biodiversity.

On the economic front, the use of steel slag aggregates can lower material costs for infrastructure developers, particularly in road construction. The superior strength, binding properties, and durability of steel slag also enhance the lifespan of roads and pavements, offering long-term value to public and private sector infrastructure projects.

Policy Alignment and National Infrastructure Goals

This development dovetails with India’s broader infrastructure and sustainability goals, including the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), the Gati Shakti initiative, and commitments made under the Paris Climate Agreement. With the government actively promoting circular economy principles and green public procurement, AM/NS India’s move positions it to benefit from regulatory support and potential incentives.

Moreover, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already endorsed the use of industrial by-products like steel slag in highway construction, providing a conducive policy environment for scaled deployment of this technology.

Future Outlook: Scaling Circular Innovation

By acquiring this steel slag aggregate license, AM/NS India is not only enhancing its environmental stewardship but also expanding its role as a solutions provider in the infrastructure value chain. The company is expected to collaborate with contractors, highway authorities, and public works departments to facilitate the adoption of the material across India.
