India’s Sports Economy Projected to Double by 2027, Driven by Media Rights, Infrastructure, and Sponsorship Growth

By Agamveer Singh , 31 July 2025

India’s sports economy is on the cusp of exponential growth, with projections indicating it could double in value by 2027. This surge will be driven by rising investments in sporting infrastructure, a booming digital and broadcast media landscape, increased sponsorships, and the rapid professionalization of leagues beyond cricket. With more private capital flowing into domestic tournaments and sports tech gaining traction, the industry is undergoing a structural shift from passion-driven patronage to commercially viable enterprise. As India positions itself as a global sports destination, this evolving ecosystem offers substantial opportunities for investors, athletes, brands, and fans alike.

A Rapidly Expanding Industry

India’s sports economy, which currently stands at an estimated Rs. 15,000 crore, is projected to surpass Rs. 30,000 crore by 2027. This forecast is underpinned by a growing middle class, increasing urbanization, and changing consumer preferences that now favor fitness, entertainment, and experiential engagement with sports.

The transformation from a cricket-centric model to a multi-sport ecosystem has been pivotal. While cricket remains dominant, leagues in kabaddi, football, wrestling, badminton, and athletics are gaining traction, broadening both viewership and investor interest. This diversification is laying the groundwork for a more resilient and dynamic sports economy.

Media Rights and Broadcast Revenues: The Growth Catalyst

The biggest contributor to the projected growth is media rights—both digital and linear broadcasting. India's vast, sports-hungry audience has become a lucrative demographic for broadcasters and streaming platforms, prompting bidding wars for content.

OTT platforms have emerged as key enablers of niche sports by delivering hyper-local and personalized content to audiences. Coupled with the expansion of internet access across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, these platforms are helping non-cricket sports find loyal viewership, translating into new monetization avenues through ad revenue and subscriptions.

Broadcast revenue from cricket alone commands over Rs. 6,000 crore annually, and this figure is expected to rise with the increasing frequency of tournaments and multi-format competitions.

Sponsorship and Brand Engagement

Sponsorships continue to fuel the sports economy, with corporates leveraging sporting events to reach younger, tech-savvy audiences. From kit sponsorships and title rights to in-stadium activations and influencer marketing, brand spending on sports is expected to see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 15% through 2027.

Global brands are increasingly aligning with Indian leagues and athletes, further commercializing the domestic sports environment. Indian startups and homegrown brands, too, are participating in large-scale activations, seeing sports as a platform for community-building and mass engagement.

Infrastructure and Private Capital Influx

Another critical enabler of this growth trajectory is the rise in public-private investments in sports infrastructure. States like Odisha, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu are investing in world-class stadiums, training facilities, and youth academies, aiming to become sports hubs. Simultaneously, private investors and real estate developers are integrating sports complexes into urban planning.

Venture capital and private equity firms are also eyeing the sports sector, especially in areas like sports tech, wearable fitness devices, fan engagement platforms, and esports—adding innovation-led scalability to the traditional sports model.

Policy Support and Institutional Backing

India’s policy shift toward sports as an economic enabler is another strong growth lever. Initiatives such as Khelo India, Fit India Movement, and targeted sports budget allocations have amplified grassroots participation and talent scouting. The increasing institutional focus on Olympic preparation and athlete welfare also reflects a shift from episodic achievements to systemic excellence.

Furthermore, sports education and management courses are on the rise, creating a professional cadre to support the business side of sports—from analytics and marketing to operations and athlete representation.

Future Outlook: Toward a Holistic Sports Economy

The Indian sports economy is poised not only for quantitative growth but also for qualitative evolution. As more leagues gain maturity and fanbases deepen, the commercial ecosystem around them—from merchandising to licensing, from ticketing to data analytics—will become more sophisticated.

India’s demographic advantage, coupled with technology integration and rising disposable incomes, will drive a sustainable boom. By 2027, sports could emerge as one of India’s most exciting economic frontiers, blending entertainment, health, technology, and community engagement.

In this changing landscape, stakeholders who embrace innovation, inclusivity, and long-term investment will likely emerge as the frontrunners of India’s sporting renaissance.
