Punjab Government Forms Sectoral Committees to Revamp Industrial Policy

By Amrita Bhatia , 11 August 2025

In a move aimed at revitalising Punjab’s industrial landscape, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, alongside Delhi's ex-Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, unveiled sector-specific committees to draft a restructured industrial policy. The initiative seeks to address long-standing challenges in manufacturing, trade, and investment while aligning the state’s economic vision with contemporary market demands. These committees will comprise industry leaders, policy experts, and government officials to ensure a collaborative approach. By focusing on targeted sectors such as textiles, agro-processing, and renewable energy, the Punjab government aims to stimulate growth, attract fresh investment, and generate employment opportunities, positioning the state as a competitive hub for sustainable industrial development.

Strategic Objective of the Initiative

The launch of sectoral committees underscores Punjab’s intent to shift from a generic, one-size-fits-all industrial framework to a tailored, market-responsive policy environment. The government’s focus is to identify sector-specific bottlenecks and craft customised solutions that foster growth, improve competitiveness, and enhance export capabilities.

Key Sectors Under Review

Committees will focus on pivotal industries that hold the potential to boost Punjab’s economic output. Priority sectors include:

Agro-processing and food technology – leveraging Punjab’s agricultural base to create high-value products.

Textiles and apparel – upgrading infrastructure to compete with global markets.

Renewable energy – supporting India’s clean energy transition and reducing dependency on conventional power sources.

Composition and Role of the Committees

Each committee will bring together a mix of policymakers, domain experts, and business leaders to ensure that policy decisions are grounded in both industry realities and developmental objectives. These bodies will conduct consultations, analyse market trends, and propose reforms ranging from regulatory simplification to infrastructure upgrades.

Economic and Investment Implications

By targeting sector-specific reforms, Punjab aims to attract new investors seeking clarity, efficiency, and growth potential. This approach is expected to open pathways for domestic and foreign investment, particularly in areas where Punjab has a competitive advantage. Increased industrial activity is also anticipated to create jobs, uplift local supply chains, and boost state revenues.

Broader Vision for Punjab’s Industrial Future

The sectoral approach is part of the government’s broader strategy to align Punjab’s economy with national and global economic shifts. By fostering innovation, enhancing export readiness, and promoting sustainable practices, the state aims to position itself as an attractive destination for industries seeking growth in a business-friendly environment.
