Finance Ministry Reviews Q1 Performance of Public Sector Banks, Highlights Credit Growth and Asset Quality

The Ministry of Finance conducted a detailed review of the first-quarter financial performance of India’s public sector banks (PSBs), focusing on credit expansion, profitability, and asset quality. The assessment highlighted steady growth in advances, improved net interest income, and declining levels of non-performing assets (NPAs). The ministry emphasized the need for banks to maintain capital adequacy, strengthen risk management, and continue supporting sectors critical to economic recovery. With the Indian economy showing resilience, PSBs are expected to play a central role in sustaining momentum by expanding credit access and ensuring financial stability.

Strong Credit Growth in Q1

The review revealed that PSBs registered healthy year-on-year growth in advances, driven primarily by retail lending, housing loans, and credit to small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Robust demand from manufacturing and services sectors further supported credit expansion.

Officials noted that consistent growth in advances reflects improving consumer confidence and business sentiment, which remain crucial for sustaining India’s broader economic recovery. Enhanced credit availability is also expected to strengthen investment cycles and boost job creation in key industries.

Asset Quality and NPAs Show Improvement

One of the significant takeaways from the review was the improvement in asset quality across public sector banks. Gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratios declined compared to the previous quarter, supported by better recoveries, write-offs, and disciplined lending practices.

The ministry acknowledged these improvements but cautioned banks to remain vigilant amid global uncertainties and domestic challenges. Emphasis was placed on maintaining robust credit appraisal systems to avoid the resurgence of bad loans, particularly in sectors vulnerable to cyclical downturns.

Profitability and Capital Adequacy

PSBs posted steady profitability in Q1, supported by rising net interest income and controlled operating expenses. Capital adequacy ratios remained above regulatory requirements, reflecting a strong foundation for further lending growth.

The government urged banks to focus on diversifying income streams, strengthening digital operations, and enhancing efficiency to sustain profitability in the coming quarters. Maintaining adequate capital buffers, it added, would be critical in ensuring resilience against potential economic headwinds.

Digital Transformation and Customer Outreach

The Finance Ministry also highlighted the need for accelerated digital adoption in banking services. With customers increasingly shifting to digital channels, PSBs are expected to expand technology-driven offerings to improve convenience, reduce transaction costs, and reach underserved regions.

At the same time, the ministry encouraged banks to enhance outreach programs for financial inclusion, particularly in rural and semi-urban markets. Expanding credit and banking services in these areas remains a policy priority to promote balanced and inclusive growth.

Outlook: Strengthening the Role of PSBs in Economic Growth

The Q1 review reaffirmed the government’s expectation that public sector banks will play a pivotal role in supporting India’s economic ambitions. With healthy credit growth, improving asset quality, and a strong capital base, PSBs are positioned to accelerate lending to industries, entrepreneurs, and households.

Looking ahead, the focus will remain on sustaining asset quality improvements, embracing digital innovation, and ensuring effective risk management. If these priorities are met, PSBs could significantly enhance their contribution to India’s growth trajectory while maintaining long-term financial stability.
