Rupee Edges Higher Against Dollar Amid Improved Forex Sentiment

By Maulik Majumdar , 29 August 2025

The Indian rupee appreciated against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, buoyed by robust domestic market inflows and improved risk sentiment in global currencies. The local unit’s rise was supported by strong foreign investor participation in equities and moderation in crude oil prices, which eased concerns over India’s import bill. While the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is expected to remain vigilant against volatility, analysts suggest the rupee’s upward movement reflects resilience despite global uncertainty. However, they caution that external headwinds such as persistent U.S. inflation and geopolitical risks could limit further gains.

Forex Market Movement

The rupee opened on a firmer note, strengthening against the dollar as foreign portfolio investors continued to inject capital into Indian equities. In intraday trade, the domestic currency touched a higher range compared with Monday’s close, reflecting steady demand for Indian assets. Market participants noted that reduced demand for the greenback from importers also supported the rupee.

Global Cues Supporting the Rally

The rupee’s rise coincided with a softer U.S. dollar index, which slipped as investors reassessed expectations of further rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve. With U.S. Treasury yields stabilizing, risk-sensitive currencies, including the rupee, gained traction. At the same time, a decline in crude oil prices provided additional relief, as India is one of the world’s largest importers of oil.

Role of RBI and Policy Outlook

Currency dealers highlighted that the RBI is likely to continue intervening in the forex market when necessary to curb sharp fluctuations. While the central bank has refrained from allowing excessive volatility, it has permitted natural market-driven movements. Experts believe this calibrated approach will help maintain currency stability without undermining competitiveness for exporters.

Impact on Trade and Businesses

A stronger rupee benefits import-heavy sectors such as energy, electronics, and manufacturing by reducing input costs. However, exporters—particularly those in IT services, textiles, and gems and jewelry—may face margin pressures if the rupee continues to appreciate. Balancing these competing interests will remain a policy challenge in the coming quarters.

Outlook for the Rupee

Looking ahead, analysts project a cautious range-bound trajectory for the rupee, influenced by global risk appetite, U.S. economic indicators, and domestic capital flows. If foreign inflows remain strong and crude prices stable, the rupee could hold on to its gains. However, renewed global tensions or a rebound in oil prices could put pressure on the local currency.
