Apple Poised to Unveil AirTag 2 at September Event With Smarter Tracking and Safety Features

By Aseem Mehta , 9 September 2025

Apple is widely expected to introduce the second generation of its location-tracking device, the AirTag 2, at its annual September event, which will also spotlight the iPhone 17 series. The updated tracker is rumored to retain its compact design while incorporating significant performance and safety upgrades. Key enhancements may include a next-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip for greater range and precision, a tamper-resistant speaker to deter misuse, and improved battery alerts. If confirmed, these refinements could further entrench Apple’s dominance in personal tracking technology while responding to growing concerns about user safety and privacy.

Strategic Timing of AirTag 2

Apple traditionally uses its September launch to refresh its flagship iPhone and complementary products. Introducing AirTag 2 alongside the iPhone 17 would align with Apple’s broader strategy of deepening its ecosystem, ensuring that its devices work seamlessly across daily use cases—from communications to location tracking. Analysts believe this timing could boost consumer interest in Apple’s accessory portfolio ahead of the holiday season, when demand for bundled devices typically surges.

Design Continuity With Practical Improvements

While the form factor is expected to mirror the original AirTag, Apple is likely to continue using the CR2032 coin-cell battery, a user-replaceable option favored for its convenience. Rather than overhauling the appearance, the company seems focused on under-the-hood improvements that strengthen both functionality and security without complicating the user experience.

Enhanced Precision Through Next-Gen UWB Chip

The most notable technological upgrade is anticipated to be the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which could expand the device’s effective range by up to three times. This advancement would not only sharpen precision finding indoors but also make AirTag 2 more reliable across crowded or signal-challenging environments—an improvement that could appeal to travelers, logistics professionals, and everyday consumers alike.

Stronger Safety and Privacy Features

AirTag’s early success was shadowed by concerns over unwanted tracking. Apple appears determined to address these issues with AirTag 2 by integrating a tamper-resistant speaker that is harder to disable. Additional safeguards, such as a “very low” battery alert, aim to keep users informed while maintaining operational reliability. These enhancements reinforce Apple’s commitment to balancing convenience with safety in its connected ecosystem.

Implications for Apple’s Ecosystem

By enhancing AirTag’s range, precision, and safety, Apple is strengthening the Find My network, which already underpins millions of devices worldwide. A more capable AirTag will not only encourage wider adoption but also support new iOS functionalities geared toward location services. From an economic perspective, the device could generate steady recurring sales in Apple’s lucrative accessories division, which continues to be a key revenue driver alongside iPhones and wearables.

This upcoming launch reflects Apple’s enduring ability to refine its ecosystem strategically, addressing consumer needs while reinforcing its premium positioning in the global tech market.
