RBI Mandates Indian Banks to Transition to '.bank.in' Domain for Enhanced Cybersecurity

By Vinod Pathak , 24 April 2025

In an effort to combat the growing threats of fraud in digital payments, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has mandated that all banks in the country transition their existing domains to the new '.bank.in' domain by October 31, 2025. This initiative, backed by the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT), aims to strengthen cybersecurity measures and reduce phishing and other malicious activities that undermine trust in India's digital banking ecosystem. The migration is expected to bolster the security of digital financial services, ensuring a safer online environment for both banks and their customers.

Introduction of the '.bank.in' Domain

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched a strategic initiative to enhance the security of India’s rapidly growing digital banking infrastructure. As part of this move, the RBI has directed all Indian banks to transition their existing internet domains to a new exclusive domain—'.bank.in'. The change is a direct response to the rising incidents of fraud in digital payments, including phishing and other cybercrimes, which have severely impacted the integrity of online banking services.

This new domain, which will be managed through the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT), aims to bolster cybersecurity, ensuring that banks' digital presence is more secure, more reliable, and more easily identifiable by customers. This development comes at a critical juncture as India’s financial services sector continues to transition towards digital-first solutions.

Rationale Behind the Transition

The shift to a dedicated '.bank.in' domain is driven by the need to reduce malicious activities such as phishing, malware attacks, and other forms of cyber fraud that threaten the safety of digital financial services. The RBI has recognized that as the adoption of digital payments accelerates, so too does the risk of cyber threats targeting both institutions and customers.

By establishing a secure, exclusive domain for Indian banks, the RBI aims to increase trust in the digital banking ecosystem. Customers will find it easier to distinguish between legitimate banking websites and potentially fraudulent ones, fostering a safer online environment. This move is expected to reduce security vulnerabilities that arise from shared, non-specific domain extensions, which have been a target for cybercriminals.

Migration Process and Timeline

The RBI has set a firm deadline for the completion of the domain migration: October 31, 2025. All banks are required to begin the migration process immediately to ensure they meet this deadline. The Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT), authorized by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), will oversee the migration and provide guidance to the banks.

Banks interested in migrating their domains can initiate the process by contacting the IDRBT at the provided email address: sahyog@idrbt.ac.in. The IDRBT will assist with the application process, offering banks the necessary support to facilitate the smooth transition to the new domain. This structured approach will help banks navigate the complexities of the migration while ensuring minimal disruption to their services.

Strengthening Trust in Digital Financial Services

The migration to the '.bank.in' domain is more than a technical upgrade—it is part of a broader strategy to foster greater consumer confidence in digital financial services. In a landscape where cyber threats are increasingly sophisticated, the RBI’s initiative sends a strong signal that security is a top priority.

With the new domain in place, banks will benefit from heightened legitimacy and credibility, while customers can feel assured that they are engaging with secure, verified banking websites. This move will also help streamline digital banking services, offering a more cohesive and secure online experience for users across India.

Conclusion: A Step Forward in Digital Security

The RBI’s mandate for banks to transition to the '.bank.in' domain represents a significant step towards securing India’s rapidly expanding digital payments ecosystem. By isolating the banking sector under an exclusive domain, the RBI is reducing vulnerabilities and offering a clearer, safer digital landscape for both institutions and customers. While the migration process may pose logistical challenges for banks, the long-term benefits in terms of cybersecurity, consumer trust, and operational integrity are invaluable. With the deadline for completion set for October 31, 2025, India’s banks have a clear roadmap ahead to bolster their digital security infrastructure.

This strategic shift reflects India’s commitment to maintaining a secure and efficient digital financial environment, positioning the country as a leader in financial technology and cybersecurity.
