India's aviation industry is grappling with significant challenges as domestic air traffic experienced a notable decline in August 2025, and thousands of passengers were affected by flight delays and cancellations. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), domestic air traffic fell to 1.29 crore passengers in August, a decrease from previous months. Simultaneously, adverse weather conditions and technical issues led to widespread disruptions, stranding travelers across major airports.
Decline in Domestic Air Traffic
The DGCA's latest data reveals a concerning trend in India's domestic air travel. In August 2025, the number of domestic air passengers dropped to 1.29 crore, marking a significant decrease compared to previous months. This downturn has raised concerns about the sustainability of the aviation sector's recovery post-pandemic.
Widespread Flight Delays and Cancellations
The aviation disruptions were not limited to decreased passenger numbers. Flight delays and cancellations affected a substantial number of travelers. In August alone, over 74,000 passengers experienced delays, with 36,362 being impacted by cancellations. The airlines incurred approximately ₹64.51 lakh in compensation and facilities for these affected passengers.
Weather-Related Disruptions
Adverse weather conditions played a significant role in the operational challenges faced by airlines. Heavy rains and storms in regions like Delhi-NCR led to numerous flight delays and diversions. For instance, five flights destined for Delhi were diverted to Jaipur due to bad weather, causing inconvenience to passengers. Additionally, an AirAsia flight from Lucknow had to make an emergency landing due to a hydraulic failure, further highlighting the impact of weather on flight operations.
Technical Glitches and Operational Challenges
Technical issues also contributed to the disruptions. An IndiGo flight was grounded in Guwahati due to a technical glitch, leading to delays and passenger inconvenience. Such incidents underscore the ongoing challenges airlines face in maintaining fleet reliability and minimizing operational disruptions.
Airline Performance Amidst Challenges
Despite the challenges, some airlines have demonstrated resilience. IndiGo led the industry with an on-time performance (OTP) rate of 90.6% in August, followed by Akasa Air at 87%, Air India Group at 84.5%, SpiceJet at 68.2%, and Alliance Air at 55.2%. These figures highlight the varying degrees of operational efficiency among carriers during a turbulent period.

The decline in air traffic and the prevalence of operational disruptions signal a need for strategic interventions in the aviation sector.
