Skoda Auto India's Strategic Shift: Planning Electric SUV Launch by 2028

By Vinod Pathak , 11 October 2025

Skoda Auto India is strategically preparing to enter the electric vehicle (EV) market, with plans to launch its first electric SUV between 2027 and 2028. This timeline aligns with the upcoming implementation of the Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms in April 2027, which are expected to drive the adoption of electric vehicles in India. The company aims to establish a localized supply chain and enhance charging infrastructure to support the EV's market entry, positioning itself to meet the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions.

Strategic Planning for EV Market Entry

Skoda Auto India is adopting a phased approach to its EV launch, focusing on building a strong local supply chain and enhancing charging infrastructure. Brand Director Ashis Gupta emphasized that the company aims to introduce its electric SUV in India during the 2027–28 period, allowing sufficient time to set up the supplier base and align with the expected development of India's EV ecosystem, including charging infrastructure and policy regulations. The electric vehicle industry comprises 10% to 12% of the total segment and is growing rapidly. By 2027–28, the right policy framework for electric vehicles would also be in place.

Alignment with Regulatory Changes

The planned EV launch coincides with the implementation of new Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms in April 2027. These regulations are expected to drive the adoption of electric vehicles in India, prompting automakers to accelerate their EV plans. Skoda's entry into the EV market is strategically timed to comply with these norms and capitalize on the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions.

Market Position and Future Outlook

Currently, Skoda Auto India holds a 1.7% market share with its four existing models: the Kylaq, Slavia, Kushaq, and Kodiaq. The company sold 53,000 units from January to September 2025, with the small SUV model, the Kylaq, contributing significantly to this volume. The introduction of an electric SUV is expected to further strengthen Skoda's position in the Indian market, aligning with the growing consumer preference for eco-friendly vehicles.

Conclusion

Skoda Auto India's strategic planning for an electric SUV launch between 2027 and 2028 demonstrates its commitment to sustainable mobility and responsiveness to regulatory changes. By focusing on building a localized supply chain and enhancing charging infrastructure, Skoda aims to establish a strong foundation for its entry into the Indian EV market. This approach positions the company to meet the growing consumer demand for electric vehicles and to contribute to India's transition towards sustainable transportation.
