In the third quarter of 2025, the global smartphone market experienced a modest year-over-year growth of 2.6%, with shipments reaching 322.7 million units. This uptick was primarily driven by heightened consumer interest in premium devices and the integration of advanced AI features, despite prevailing economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions.

Market Overview

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), global smartphone shipments increased by 2.6% in Q3 2025, totaling 322.7 million units. This growth was attributed to a resurgence in consumer demand for high-end smartphones, particularly those equipped with AI capabilities, which spurred upgrades and replacements. Companies like Apple and Samsung led the market, benefiting from strong sales of their latest flagship models.

Leading Manufacturers

  • Samsung: Retained its position as the market leader, shipping 61.4 million units and capturing a 19% market share. The success of its Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 models contributed significantly to this performance.
  • Apple: Achieved its best third-quarter results to date, shipping 58.6 million units and securing an 18% market share. The iPhone 17 series, particularly the value-oriented base model, resonated well with consumers, driving growth.
  • Xiaomi: Held a 14% market share, with strong performances in Europe and Latin America, bolstered by its Redmi and Poco lines.
  • Transsion: Captured a 9% market share, expanding its footprint in Africa.
  • Vivo: Also at 9%, focused on emerging markets with affordable AI-powered smartphones.

Regional Insights

  • Asia-Pacific: The region experienced robust growth, driven by markets such as India and China. In India, smartphone exports surged by 60% in the first half of fiscal year 2025-26, reaching $13.5 billion, with Apple playing a pivotal role in this expansion. In China, Apple's shipments increased by 0.6% year-over-year to 10.8 million units, allowing it to capture a 15.8% market share and rise to the second spot in terms of shipments. This growth was attributed to the strong performance of the value-oriented iPhone 17 base model, which appealed to price-conscious consumers.
  • North America and Europe: Replacement cycles and trade-in programs stimulated demand, particularly for premium devices.
  • Emerging Markets: Brands like Xiaomi and Vivo capitalized on the demand for affordable smartphones, integrating AI features to enhance user experience.

Future Outlook

Analysts remain cautiously optimistic about the smartphone market's trajectory for the remainder of 2025. While the third-quarter growth is encouraging, it is viewed as a rebound from a low base rather than the onset of a full-scale boom. Factors such as ongoing economic uncertainties, tariff issues, and supply chain challenges could impact future growth.
