Ola Group Leads India's Unicorns in Patent Filings, Cementing Its Position as a Deep-Tech Innovator

Ola Group, a conglomerate spanning ride-hailing, electric vehicles (EVs), and artificial intelligence (AI), has emerged as a dominant force in India's intellectual property (IP) landscape. Holding over 50% of all patents filed by India's 117 unicorns, Ola is reshaping the country's tech innovation sector. The company’s commitment to deep-tech innovation is reflected in its extensive patent portfolio, particularly in the electric vehicle sector. With a robust focus on research and development (R&D), Ola is positioning itself not only as a leader in India but also as a global tech powerhouse.

Ola Group's Dominance in Patent Filings

In an impressive display of innovation, Ola Group holds more than half of all patents filed by India’s unicorns, which collectively have filed a mere 229 patents. This highlights the company's significant role in driving technological advancement within India's burgeoning startup ecosystem. With over 650 patent applications filed, of which 180 have been granted, Ola stands as the undisputed leader in intellectual property within the Indian tech space.

The group’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio is spread across its various arms, including Ola Electric, Ola Cabs, and Krutrim. However, it is Ola Electric, the EV subsidiary, that is making the most substantial contributions, accounting for 70-80% of the total patents filed. The patents cover a wide range of technologies, including battery innovation, vehicle software, artificial intelligence (AI), and safety systems—all pivotal to Ola's strategy to revolutionize the mobility and EV industries.

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Ola Founder Bhavish Aggarwal expressed his pride in the company’s accomplishments, while also acknowledging that they would need to accelerate their patent filings further to meet ambitious growth goals. "Not happy with our number of 650 applied patents though. We will accelerate much much more in coming years!" he stated.

Focus on Research and Development

Ola's focus on innovation is underscored by its heavy investment in research and development (R&D). In FY23, Ola Electric invested a significant Rs 507 crore in R&D, representing 19.3% of its total annual revenue. This marked a sharp increase from the Rs 175 crore invested in the previous fiscal year. Ola’s commitment to R&D is set to intensify further, with plans to allocate Rs 1,600 crore for technological advancements between FY25 and FY27.

This investment trajectory highlights the company’s strategic priority of leveraging cutting-edge technology to maintain its competitive edge in the EV and mobility sectors. As noted in its initial public offering (IPO) prospectus, Ola views R&D and technology as the backbone of its business model, emphasizing the central role innovation plays in its long-term growth strategy.

Ola Electric: Leading India's EV Patent Race

Ola Electric has been at the forefront of patenting innovations in the electric vehicle sector. In FY23 alone, the company filed 205 patents, making it India’s leading patent filer in the EV industry. These patents encompass various innovations aimed at enhancing the efficiency, safety, and performance of electric vehicles. The company’s patents are particularly noteworthy in the domains of battery technology, vehicle software, and safety systems—areas that are critical to the success of any electric mobility initiative.

In addition to its domestic achievements, Ola Electric has also filed patents globally, with filings and granted patents in countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, China, and Australia. This global expansion of Ola Electric’s patent portfolio signifies the company’s ambition to position itself as a major global player in the electric vehicle sector.

The Patent Gap in India's Startup Ecosystem

Despite the impressive achievements of Ola Group, the report also reveals a significant disparity in patent filings among India’s unicorns. A staggering 101 of India’s unicorns have filed zero patents, underscoring a tilt in the ecosystem toward securing high valuations and market share rather than focusing on long-term technological innovation. This trend highlights a critical gap in India’s startup culture, where IP creation often takes a back seat to other aspects of business growth.

In contrast, Ola's heavy emphasis on patent filings illustrates the potential for Indian startups to build competitive advantages by investing in deep technology. By prioritizing intellectual property, Ola Group is not just positioning itself as a dominant player in India but is also making significant strides on the global stage, particularly in the electric vehicle and AI-driven tech sectors.

Ola Group's Future in Global Tech Innovation

Looking ahead, Ola's commitment to R&D and innovation is likely to continue as the company expands its footprint across new technological frontiers. With aggressive patent filing strategies, including the Rs 1,600 crore earmarked for future R&D investments, Ola Group is positioning itself to lead in sectors that will define the future of mobility, from electric vehicles to AI-powered solutions.

By securing a substantial share of India’s unicorn patents, the group not only showcases its technological prowess but also demonstrates a forward-thinking approach that could drive long-term success. As global competition in the EV and tech sectors intensifies, Ola’s ability to maintain a strong IP portfolio will be crucial to sustaining its growth and innovation.

In summary, Ola Group is setting the pace for India’s deep-tech revolution, proving that intellectual property and R&D investment are essential for securing leadership in tomorrow's tech-driven economy. As the company continues to innovate and expand globally, its patent portfolio will serve as a key pillar of its competitive advantage, paving the way for future breakthroughs in technology and sustainable mobility.
