PCBL Posts Rs. 94 Crore Net Profit in Q1, Down 19% Amid Input Cost Pressures

Phillips Carbon Black Ltd. (PCBL) reported a 19% decline in net profit for the first quarter of FY25, registering Rs. 94 crore compared to Rs. 116 crore in the same quarter last year. The dip in profitability came despite stable revenues, as the company faced higher input costs and softer demand in key global markets. While PCBL continues to expand its product portfolio and focus on specialty black, the recent margin pressure underscores the challenges facing industrial manufacturers amid volatile raw material prices and a sluggish recovery in global trade.

Earnings Snapshot: Profit Slips Despite Revenue Stability

PCBL’s consolidated revenue from operations for the April–June quarter stood at Rs. 1,446 crore, broadly in line with the previous year. However, a sharp rise in input costs—particularly feedstock and energy—pressured operating margins, leading to a 19% drop in net profit to Rs. 94 crore. This marks the second consecutive quarter of margin contraction for the carbon black major, reflecting the broader input inflation facing the petrochemicals sector.

The earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margin declined to 13.8%, down from 17.1% in Q1 FY24, underscoring operational headwinds.

Global Demand Trends and Market Dynamics

PCBL, a major supplier of carbon black used in tyres, industrial rubber, plastics, and paints, saw sluggish offtake in overseas markets due to subdued demand from the automotive and construction sectors. While domestic demand remained relatively stable, exports took a hit from geopolitical tensions, weak freight economics, and macroeconomic uncertainty in Europe and Southeast Asia.

Despite this, the company continues to hold its ground as a top-tier carbon black producer in India, supported by long-standing customer relationships and supply contracts with leading tyre manufacturers.

Focus on Specialty Grades and Sustainability

In response to tightening margins and evolving customer needs, PCBL is accelerating its transition toward higher-margin specialty black products. These grades, used in advanced plastic compounds, inks, and electronics, offer better pricing power and resilience against raw material volatility.

The company is also advancing its sustainability agenda. PCBL has ramped up initiatives focused on energy recovery, waste heat utilization, and emissions control across its plants. These efforts aim to improve operational efficiency while aligning with global environmental benchmarks—key to winning long-term contracts with multinational clients.

Capacity Expansion and Strategic Roadmap

PCBL remains committed to its expansion pipeline. Its new greenfield plant in Tamil Nadu, with a capacity of 150,000 tonnes per annum, is expected to boost its overall output and bring economies of scale in the medium term. The company is also investing in downstream infrastructure to support its specialty black business, including a dedicated R&D facility and customer support lab.

Capex guidance for FY25 remains conservative, with management prioritizing efficiency over aggressive expansion. The firm’s debt levels remain under control, giving it room to maneuver in a cost-sensitive environment.

Outlook: Navigating Challenges, Building for the Future

While short-term profitability may remain under pressure due to elevated costs and global uncertainties, PCBL’s long-term fundamentals remain intact. The company’s strategic shift toward high-value products, investment in sustainability, and continued focus on operational resilience are expected to deliver shareholder value over time.

With a cautiously optimistic outlook for the remainder of FY25, PCBL is positioning itself not just as a commodity supplier, but as a value-driven chemical innovator ready to meet the demands of a transforming industrial landscape.
