The Punjab government has announced plans to commission a Rs 9.50 crore chilli processing facility in Abohar by September this year, underscoring the state’s push towards agricultural diversification. The project, spearheaded by the Punjab Agri Export Corporation Ltd (PAGREXCO), aims to support the burgeoning chilli cultivation sector and expand processing capabilities. Spread across one acre, the plant will process five tonnes of chillies per hour, ensuring streamlined supply chains and enhanced market opportunities for farmers. This initiative also aligns with Punjab’s broader vision to reduce reliance on conventional crops, particularly wheat and paddy, and foster sustainable agricultural practices.
Strategic Initiative for Chilli Cultivation
The Abohar chilli processing plant marks a significant milestone in Punjab’s agricultural sector, reflecting the government’s commitment to harnessing the potential of alternative crops. With an investment of Rs 9.50 crore, the facility is being developed on a one-acre site by PAGREXCO. Designed to process five tonnes of chillies per hour, the plant promises to improve processing efficiency and open new market channels for chilli farmers.
Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian has emphasized the importance of the project in driving agricultural diversification. He highlighted the increasing adoption of high-yielding chilli varieties by farmers, which has significantly expanded the cultivation area in the state.
Growing Chilli Cultivation in Punjab
As of 2024, Punjab’s chilli cultivation covers 10,614 hectares—the highest in recent years—producing 21,416 metric tonnes of chillies. Ferozepur district has emerged as the state’s chilli cultivation leader, followed by Patiala, Malerkotla, Sangrur, Jalandhar, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, SBS Nagar, and Hoshiarpur.
Ferozepur’s impressive average yield of 19 metric tonnes per hectare stands as a testament to the region’s efficient agricultural practices and robust farming techniques. The rise in chilli cultivation has not only diversified Punjab’s agricultural portfolio but also strengthened the resilience of the rural economy.
PAGREXCO’s Role in Market Access
PAGREXCO plays a pivotal role in Punjab’s chilli sector by directly sourcing produce from farmers and aggregators, ensuring transparency and efficiency in procurement. With an extensive marketing network, the corporation has positioned Punjab as a prominent exporter of red chilli paste to markets in the Middle East and Africa.
The new processing plant in Abohar will further strengthen PAGREXCO’s ability to add value to the state’s chilli harvest, fostering greater export potential and bolstering income for farmers.
