Rising Medical Costs Leave Most Indians Doubting Their Health Insurance Coverage: A Wake-Up Call for the Industry

A growing number of insured Indians are grappling with a disconcerting reality: their health insurance may not be enough. A recent survey conducted by Future Generali India Insurance reveals that more than 80% of policyholders feel uncertain about the adequacy of their coverage amid soaring healthcare costs. With India facing one of the highest rates of medical inflation in Asia, even insured individuals are struggling to manage hospitalization expenses. The findings underscore the urgent need for more resilient and flexible health insurance solutions tailored to the modern Indian consumer’s financial vulnerability.

Mounting Medical Costs Undermine Policyholder Confidence

India's rapidly escalating healthcare expenses are sowing doubt among policyholders about the strength of their existing insurance plans. According to the Health Unlimited survey by Future Generali India Insurance, over 80% of respondents expressed a lack of confidence in their health insurance coverage, citing high hospitalization bills as a primary concern.

The study, which gathered responses from 800 insured individuals aged 25 and above, paints a worrying picture: nearly two-thirds of respondents felt financially exposed and inadequately protected when faced with actual claims. This perceived vulnerability reveals a deep chasm between what health insurance policies promise and the harsh realities consumers encounter during medical emergencies.

India’s Alarming Rate of Medical Inflation

India’s healthcare sector is undergoing significant inflationary pressure, with the country reportedly experiencing a medical inflation rate of approximately 14% in 2021—markedly higher than that of peer Asian nations such as China, Indonesia, and Vietnam. This inflation not only erodes the value of existing health insurance covers but also escalates the financial burden on families already contending with high out-of-pocket expenses.

For the average Indian policyholder, this translates to mounting anxiety. Despite maintaining active health coverage, many find themselves financially strained during prolonged hospital stays or treatments that exceed initial estimates.

Recharge and Restoration: The New Essentials in Health Insurance

The survey also highlighted a critical shift in consumer expectations. A staggering 90% of policyholders now regard the "recharge of sum insured" as a vital feature in their insurance plans. This reflects an evolving awareness that a one-time coverage limit is often insufficient in the face of unpredictable and repeated medical episodes.

Recognizing this need, Future Generali India Insurance has introduced an enhanced solution: Health Unlimited. The new offering is designed to provide continuous coverage by restoring the sum insured multiple times throughout the policy period. Starting from the second claim onward, customers benefit from unlimited restoration, offering a safety net even in scenarios of repeated or chronic health issues.

According to Anup Rau, Managing Director and CEO of the company, this product aims to bridge the gap between coverage and cost. “Rising cost of medical treatment is a cause of concern for a vast majority of people in India, despite having a health cover,” Rau said. “Health Unlimited ensures customers never run out of coverage, even in the face of surging bills.”

A Call for Industry Innovation and Policy Reform

The findings from this survey should serve as a clarion call for India’s insurance sector. As healthcare costs rise and consumer trust wanes, insurers must pivot toward more dynamic, responsive products that offer not just financial protection but peace of mind.

Policy innovation, greater transparency, and consumer education are essential to rebuild confidence. Solutions like unlimited restoration of sum insured reflect a much-needed departure from static coverage models to more fluid, real-world-responsive insurance plans. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, the insurance industry’s ability to anticipate and adapt to policyholders’ changing needs will determine its relevance and resilience in the years ahead.
