RITES Charts a Resilient Course: Export Momentum, Strategic Diversification Set Stage for Record FY26

By Vinod Pathak , 19 May 2025

RITES Ltd, a premier engineering consultancy and a Navratna public sector undertaking, is strategically positioning itself for robust growth in the coming fiscal year through focused international outreach, export order wins, and domestic market diversification. Despite a modest 4.3% year-on-year decline in operating revenue to Rs. 615 crore for the March quarter, the company posted a 3.4% rise in net profit to Rs. 141 crore. Chairman and Managing Director Rahul Mithal outlined a forward-looking blueprint involving renewed export momentum, diversification in Quality Assurance (QA) services, and an aggressive push for high-margin consultancy work—aiming for record-breaking revenue in FY26.

Reclaiming Global Ground: Export Revival in Motion

The export segment, particularly in rolling stock, which had been severely impacted due to a pandemic-induced dry spell in fresh orders from Africa and South Asia, is witnessing a strategic revival. Through sustained international engagement and competitive bidding, RITES has secured multiple export deals—most notably, a Rs. 300 crore order from Mozambique for 10 locomotives, the company’s first such win via global competitive bidding.

As of March 31, 2025, the firm’s export order book has reached Rs. 1,360 crore. Key contracts include:

  • Bangladesh: Rs. 900 crore order for 200 passenger coaches
  • Mozambique: Rs. 300 crore for 10 locomotives
  • South Africa: Rs. 150 crore across three orders for three locomotives each

These projects are expected to start contributing to revenue from FY26 onward, considering the typical 15-24 month execution-to-revenue cycle.

Quality Assurance Segment Navigates Competitive Shake-Up

RITES’ Quality Assurance business faced challenges after Indian Railways opened up its QA framework to competitive bidding, awarding work to four firms for the first time. With the entry of new players such as TuV India Pvt. Ltd., Bureau Veritas India Pvt. Ltd., and Intertek India Pvt. Ltd., traditional volume and margins were temporarily disrupted.

In response, RITES adopted a diversified client acquisition model—expanding QA services beyond railways into emerging sectors:

  • Renewable energy (especially solar)
  • Power transmission and distribution
  • Jal Jeevan Mission and public health infrastructure
  • PM Vishwakarma Yojana
  • Vendor assessments for the Government eMarketplace (GeM)
  • International safety audits and independent assessments

This multi-sectoral pivot has helped stabilize QA revenues and created long-term resilience for the segment.

Domestic Consultancy: High-Margin Projects Bolster Core Strength

Beyond exports and QA, domestic consultancy remains a cornerstone of RITES' operations. Recognizing the need to safeguard profitability, the company prioritized the execution of high-margin consultancy projects in FY25. This strategic focus helped mitigate the overall decline in operating revenue and shielded bottom-line performance.

“From the outset of FY25, we emphasized execution of domestic consultancy projects, especially the high-margin ones, which helped us limit the dip in operating revenue and profits year-on-year,” noted CMD Rahul Mithal.

Aggressive Order Acquisition Strategy Yields Historic Results

RITES’ internal strategy to become a "one order a day" company proved to be a key revenue enabler. By the end of FY25, the firm had secured over 500 fresh contracts worth Rs. 5,500 crore, culminating in an all-time high order book of Rs. 8,877 crore.

This robust pipeline, built on consistent outreach and diversified project acquisitions, now serves as a springboard for an ambitious revenue target in FY26.

Outlook: Poised for a Breakout Year in FY26

Looking ahead, Mithal laid out a twin-pronged approach anchored in accelerated execution and continued aggressive order inflows. With export orders in the pipeline and a fortified domestic consultancy base, RITES is well positioned to register its highest-ever revenues in FY26.

The company aims to maintain its track record of daily order wins while expanding its international footprint—ensuring that both diversification and global expansion remain integral to its growth narrative.

Conclusion

RITES Ltd's strategic adaptability amid evolving market dynamics showcases a textbook case of public sector resilience. By leveraging targeted international engagement, sectoral diversification, and operational discipline, the company is not merely weathering post-pandemic disruptions—it is reshaping its growth trajectory. With an export resurgence and a record order book, RITES enters FY26 not as a recovery story, but as a resurgent engine of India’s infrastructure and export ambitions.
