Rupee Slips to Record Low of 87.78 Against US Dollar Amid Global Pressure

By Vinod Pathak , 27 August 2025

The Indian rupee weakened further on Monday, closing at 87.78 against the US dollar, marking one of its sharpest declines in recent months. The currency’s fall was driven by sustained dollar strength, elevated US bond yields, and persistent concerns over global economic uncertainty. Adding to pressure, foreign portfolio outflows and higher crude oil prices weighed on market sentiment. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was reportedly active in managing volatility but refrained from aggressive intervention. Analysts believe that near-term currency trends will be shaped by global monetary policy cues and external trade balances rather than domestic fundamentals.

Dollar Strength Dominates Currency Markets

The greenback continued to strengthen globally, supported by resilient US economic data and expectations of higher-for-longer interest rates from the Federal Reserve. This rally has placed emerging market currencies, including the rupee, under persistent stress.

Currency traders noted that despite the RBI’s efforts to smooth excessive volatility, the pressure from international flows and demand for the dollar remained dominant, pushing the rupee to fresh lows during the trading session.

Role of Crude Oil and Capital Flows

India’s reliance on imported crude oil has made the rupee particularly sensitive to fluctuations in energy prices. A recent uptick in Brent crude has raised concerns of a widening current account deficit, adding further weakness to the local currency.

Additionally, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been net sellers in Indian equities and debt, compounding pressure on the rupee. Analysts highlighted that sustained outflows, if they continue, could amplify currency depreciation and test the RBI’s resolve in maintaining stability.

RBI’s Intervention Strategy

Market participants observed sporadic dollar sales by the central bank, aimed at limiting sharp swings in the exchange rate. However, the RBI appears to be conserving reserves and allowing a measured adjustment of the rupee in line with broader market trends.

Experts note that while intervention can provide temporary relief, it is unlikely to reverse the trajectory unless global headwinds, such as dollar strength and crude prices, begin to ease.

Outlook and Investor Implications

Economists caution that further depreciation cannot be ruled out if global risk aversion intensifies. A weaker rupee increases import costs, raising the specter of imported inflation, though it also provides a competitive advantage to exporters.

For investors, the rupee’s fall highlights the importance of currency risk management in cross-border investments. Corporates with overseas debt exposure may face higher repayment costs, while exporters could see margin relief.

Conclusion

The rupee’s slide to 87.78 against the US dollar reflects the dominance of global macroeconomic forces over domestic fundamentals. Until clarity emerges on US monetary policy and energy market stability, India’s currency is likely to remain under pressure. Market observers suggest that the RBI’s calibrated interventions, alongside strong foreign exchange reserves, should prevent disorderly moves, though the path ahead remains challenging.
