Sensex and Nifty Extend Losses as Rupee Slips to Record Low Amid U.S. Policy Concerns

Indian equities ended lower for a third consecutive session on Tuesday as weakness in global sentiment and pressure on the rupee weighed on investor confidence. The benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, traded in negative territory for most of the day, with losses led by information technology and financial stocks. While auto shares provided some relief, concerns over a proposed U.S. visa fee hike and tariffs dampened market mood. The rupee’s sharp decline to an all-time low intensified worries about capital outflows and import-led inflation, signaling heightened volatility ahead for both domestic and foreign investors.

Market Overview

The BSE Sensex closed at Rs. 82,102.10, down 57.87 points (0.07%), while the NSE Nifty 50 ended at Rs. 25,169.50, shedding 32.85 points (0.13%). This marked the third straight day of declines for both benchmarks.

Market breadth remained weak, with most sectors closing in the red. The sell-off was particularly pronounced in IT and banking stocks, while auto shares gained amid optimism over festive-season demand and recent tax adjustments.

Despite a relatively stable opening, selling pressure intensified in late trade as the rupee fell to record lows, spurring concerns about foreign investor sentiment.

Rupee Hits Historic Low

The Indian rupee fell sharply to Rs. 88.7975 per U.S. dollar during intraday trade, before settling near Rs. 88.7550. The currency’s decline of 0.5% reflects rising external headwinds, including tariff uncertainties and tighter U.S. visa policies.

A weaker rupee poses multiple challenges. It increases the cost of imports, particularly crude oil and other essential commodities, which could stoke inflationary pressures. It also raises repayment burdens for companies with foreign currency debt, potentially impacting corporate earnings.

Currency depreciation tends to trigger capital flight as foreign investors hedge against volatility, further straining liquidity in domestic markets.

U.S. Visa Fee Proposal Weighs on IT Sector

The proposed increase in U.S. H-1B visa fees sparked a sell-off in India’s IT sector. This policy shift, if implemented, would directly raise operational costs for Indian outsourcing firms serving American clients.

Large technology companies, already grappling with muted demand in key markets, could see a squeeze on margins. The development also threatens India’s competitive edge in the global services industry, raising concerns about future earnings growth in the sector.

Shares of leading IT firms fell between 1% and 2%, contributing significantly to the broader market’s decline.

Auto Sector Shows Resilience

Auto stocks were among the few gainers, benefiting from positive domestic triggers. Festive-season demand, combined with recent reductions in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on certain vehicles, bolstered investor sentiment toward the sector.

Market participants are betting on strong retail sales through the upcoming festival period, which historically drives higher volumes for automobile manufacturers.

Analysts believe the sector could continue to outperform in the near term, provided consumer confidence remains intact and interest rates stay supportive.

Technical Indicators and Key Levels

Technical analysts noted that the Nifty 50 is approaching a critical support level near Rs. 25,100, with stronger downside protection seen around Rs. 24,900, the 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA).

On the upside, resistance is expected between Rs. 25,300 and Rs. 25,400.
A sustained break above this range could indicate renewed bullish momentum, while a breach of lower support may signal a deeper corrective phase.

Short-term traders are advised to maintain cautious positions and use stop losses, given the heightened volatility and external uncertainties.

Investor Implications

Sectoral Strategy:

  • Bullish Outlook: Autos and domestic consumption-oriented sectors.
  • Cautious View: IT and export-focused industries sensitive to U.S. policies and currency fluctuations.

Currency Management:
Companies with dollar-denominated liabilities or heavy reliance on imports should prioritize hedging strategies to mitigate risks from further rupee weakness.

Defensive Positioning:
Investors may consider reallocating toward large-cap stocks with stable earnings and lower leverage to weather near-term volatility.

Broader Market Perspective

The recent market weakness underscores a challenging backdrop for Indian equities. While domestic fundamentals remain solid — with steady consumption trends and policy support — external pressures are increasingly dictating short-term market movements.

The rupee’s historic slide and U.S. visa fee proposals serve as reminders of India’s deep linkages to global trade and capital flows. Foreign institutional investors remain key drivers of liquidity, and their risk aversion can significantly amplify market swings.

For now, the balance of risks suggests a consolidation phase rather than a full-blown downturn. Clearer signals on U.S. policy and currency stabilization will likely determine the market’s next directional move.

Conclusion

Indian equity markets are navigating a complex mix of domestic strength and external vulnerability. The rupee’s record low, combined with uncertainty over U.S. trade and visa policies, has unsettled investors and heightened volatility.

While auto stocks offer pockets of optimism, broader market sentiment remains fragile. In this environment, disciplined investing, prudent sector selection, and active risk management will be essential as traders and investors position for the final quarter of the year.
