Sensex Climbs 319 Points as IT Stocks Lead Market Rally

The benchmark Sensex surged 319 points on Monday, buoyed by strong buying in information technology stocks and renewed investor optimism over global economic cues. Positive sentiment from U.S. markets, coupled with firm corporate earnings and robust foreign inflows, contributed to the upward movement. The Nifty 50 also gained, supported by heavyweight IT counters and select banking stocks. While midcap and smallcap indices traded with mixed cues, broader market confidence remained intact as traders anticipated steady monetary policy and improving macroeconomic indicators.

IT Stocks Power Market Momentum

The rally was primarily driven by information technology majors, which saw renewed investor interest following upbeat earnings forecasts and stable global demand indicators. Companies such as Infosys, TCS, Wipro, and HCLTech advanced between 1% and 3%, pushing the Nifty IT index higher. Market participants cited improved visibility in U.S. tech spending and expectations of a soft landing in global economies as key factors driving the IT uptrend.

Analysts noted that the sector’s relative resilience amid global volatility has positioned it as a defensive bet for investors seeking stability. “With the dollar index softening and cross-currency headwinds easing, IT exporters are poised for margin recovery in the coming quarters,” said a Mumbai-based equity strategist.

Banking and Energy Stocks Support Gains

Besides technology, banking and energy counters provided additional support to the benchmarks. Private lenders such as ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank recorded moderate gains, reflecting stable credit demand and sound asset quality across the sector.

In the energy space, Reliance Industries extended its upward movement after recent announcements of new ventures in green energy and petrochemicals. The oil-to-telecom conglomerate remains a key driver for index performance, with investors closely tracking its retail and digital business expansion plans.

Broader Market Performance and Sectoral Trends

The Nifty 50 closed above the 21,600 mark, while the Sensex settled at around 71,300, marking a 0.45% increase. Among sectoral indices, IT, FMCG, and energy led the gains, while metals and real estate witnessed mild profit booking.

Broader markets reflected a mixed tone, with midcap indices marginally higher and smallcaps underperforming due to selective selling pressure. Market breadth remained positive, supported by sustained domestic institutional investment and healthy retail participation.

Global Cues and Investor Outlook

Global markets also influenced the bullish tone in Indian equities. Asian indices traded mostly higher as investors awaited key inflation data from the United States and China, which could shape near-term policy expectations. Meanwhile, falling U.S. bond yields and a softer dollar strengthened risk appetite in emerging markets.

Analysts expect short-term volatility but maintain a constructive view on Indian equities, driven by solid domestic macro fundamentals and resilient corporate earnings. “The ongoing rally in IT and banking suggests sector rotation rather than speculative momentum. With festive consumption strong and fiscal discipline intact, India’s growth story remains compelling,” said an analyst at a domestic brokerage firm.

Conclusion

Monday’s rally reaffirmed investor faith in India’s market fundamentals, particularly in export-driven IT stocks that are regaining momentum after months of consolidation. With global cues stabilizing and domestic earnings staying robust, the Sensex and Nifty appear well-positioned for continued strength—though intermittent profit booking and global uncertainties may keep traders cautious in the near term.
