Sensex Ends Flat as Reform Optimism Balances Sectoral Weakness

By Kunal Shrivastav , 8 September 2025

Indian equity benchmarks delivered a muted close on September 5, 2025, with the BSE Sensex finishing at Rs. 80,710.76, down 7.25 points (0.01%), while the Nifty 50 edged up 6.70 points (0.03%) to 24,741.00. Intraday volatility was pronounced, with early gains from reform-led enthusiasm countered by profit-booking in IT and consumer sectors. Auto and metal counters offered support, but defensive selling capped the upside. The day’s outcome highlights an equity market caught between policy-driven optimism and persistent global uncertainties, reflecting a phase of consolidation rather than decisive momentum.

Volatility Defines the Session

The Sensex swung more than 700 points during the session, briefly crossing the 80,720 mark before retreating. The Nifty mirrored this choppiness, though it managed to close marginally in the green. Market participants attributed the volatility to tax reform expectations under the new GST 2.0 framework, tempered by profit-taking in heavyweight sectors.

Reforms Stir Optimism

The announcement of broader tax rationalization measures under GST 2.0 lifted sentiment, particularly in consumer-facing industries. Auto manufacturers and metals gained as investors bet on renewed consumption demand and cost efficiencies. However, analysts warned that enthusiasm may already be partly priced in, limiting short-term rallies.

Sectoral Performance: Gains and Drags

Gainers: Auto stocks advanced nearly 1.3%, with Mahindra & Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki among the top performers. Metals also saw steady buying, supported by a rebound in global commodity prices.

Laggers: The IT index fell by about 1.4%, while FMCG slipped nearly 1.2% as traders locked in profits. Notable decliners included TCS, HCL Tech, ITC, and Tech Mahindra.

This divergence reflected the market’s shifting priorities—growth-linked sectors benefiting from policy momentum, while defensives bore the brunt of rotation.

Technical Outlook

Market experts see the Nifty facing strong resistance near 25,000, with immediate support placed around 24,520. The session’s range-bound close signals consolidation, and analysts advise caution until a clear breakout is established. Weekly, both indices recorded gains—Sensex rose 1.3% and Nifty climbed 1.1%, largely supported by auto and metal counters.

Global Cues and Forward Guidance

Beyond domestic reforms, global dynamics remain pivotal. Investors are closely watching U.S. monetary policy moves and international trade developments for signals on capital flows. Morgan Stanley has projected significant upside potential, suggesting the Sensex could reach Rs. 89,000 by June 2026, with a bull-case target of Rs. 100,000, contingent on sustained earnings growth and macroeconomic resilience.

Conclusion

Friday’s close underscores a market in balance—buoyed by reform-driven optimism but weighed down by selective profit-taking and global caution. For long-term investors, the structural outlook remains favorable, yet near-term movements may stay constrained within a consolidation band.
