Skoda Auto India Eyes Stronger Export Growth Amid Local Success and Strategic Product Launches

By Gurminder Mangat , 19 April 2025

Skoda Auto India is actively seeking to increase its export share within the global automotive landscape, even as it remains deeply committed to expanding its overseas shipments. Brand Director Petr Janeba highlighted the company's focus on improving exports, noting that while the main exports currently stem from Volkswagen-branded vehicles, Skoda is progressively venturing into new markets. This push aligns with the launch of key models like the second-generation Kodiaq SUV, reflecting the company's ongoing commitment to both domestic growth and international outreach.

Expanding Market Reach: Vietnam and Beyond

Skoda Auto India has made notable strides in expanding its export footprint, with a particular emphasis on Southeast Asia. The company has opened a new factory in Vietnam, which is serving as a strategic gateway to the ASEAN region. This factory not only facilitates the export of completely built units (CBUs) to countries like Vietnam but also marks the beginning of a new venture—exporting auto parts to the Southeast Asian nation. As Janeba pointed out, Vietnam’s growing importance within the company’s export strategy is pivotal, as the country lays the groundwork for future expansion to other markets in ASEAN, including Malaysia and Indonesia.

This export expansion is a direct result of Skoda Auto India’s efforts to optimize its production and supply chains, ensuring that it can meet the demands of diverse markets. The goal is clear: leverage the growing potential of the ASEAN region while simultaneously ensuring the local content requirements for right-hand-drive cars are met.

Export Strategy and the Shift Toward a Global Product Offering

Skoda’s export efforts are strategically aligned with its product development cycle. Janeba emphasized the importance of planning exports alongside the development of new products. While Skoda Auto India has experienced growth in exports, it remains clear that each market has distinct needs—whether related to technology, safety standards, powertrain configurations, or emissions requirements. As such, export decisions must be integrated into the early stages of product planning to ensure compatibility with regional regulations and consumer preferences.

The current export portfolio includes popular models such as the Volkswagen Virtus, Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq, alongside legacy vehicles like the Volkswagen Vento and Polo. Skoda’s ability to cater to different regional needs is evident in its adaptation of the left-hand-drive Kushaq for international markets, and its gradual transition into left- and right-hand-drive configurations for the Slavia model, specifically designed for Vietnam.

This approach highlights the company’s agility in responding to market demands while maintaining a strong focus on product localization. The aim is not just to sell cars, but to develop vehicles tailored to the specific preferences of consumers in diverse global markets.

Skoda Auto India’s Impressive Domestic Sales Surge

While Skoda’s export efforts are central to its growth strategy, the company has also made significant strides in the domestic market. March 2025 saw Skoda Auto India record its highest-ever monthly sales, with 7,422 units sold. This surge in sales was largely driven by strong demand for the newly launched Kodiaq SUV, along with continued popularity for the Slavia and Kushaq models.

The launch of the second-generation Kodiaq has been a particularly important milestone in Skoda's product offensive strategy. Positioned as a luxurious and technologically advanced offering, the Kodiaq enhances Skoda’s presence in the premium segment, offering both city-friendly handling and rugged all-terrain capabilities. Janeba highlighted that the Kodiaq has become a key product in the company’s lineup, growing into a legacy name akin to the Octavia and Superb.

This solid domestic performance is essential for Skoda Auto India as it seeks to balance local growth with a global expansion strategy. The success of models like the Kodiaq, Slavia, and Kushaq provides a strong foundation for the company as it enters new markets and continues to develop products designed for a broader global audience.

Electric Vehicle Transition and Domestic Market Dynamics

While Skoda Auto India is focusing on international markets, it also faces challenges in the domestic automotive landscape, particularly regarding the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). According to Janeba, the Indian market is not yet at a stage where electric cars can fully replace conventional vehicles as the primary family car. He noted that the transition to electric mobility would take time, with a gradual shift expected over the coming years.

The company’s approach to this transition is methodical, as it prepares for a future where EVs will play a central role in the automotive sector. However, for now, Skoda Auto India is concentrating on strengthening its presence with traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles while also preparing for an eventual pivot towards electric offerings in response to market demands and evolving regulatory landscapes.

Skoda’s Strategic Path Forward

As Skoda Auto India continues to evolve, its strategy remains clear: expand both domestically and internationally while staying flexible to market needs. The company is committed to increasing its export share and establishing a more diversified global presence, particularly in Southeast Asia. At the same time, it remains focused on delivering high-quality, innovative products that resonate with customers in the premium vehicle segment.

Skoda’s ability to successfully navigate these dual priorities—growing export volumes while ensuring local market success—will be crucial in determining its long-term standing in the highly competitive Indian and global automotive markets. With a growing product portfolio and strong sales momentum, the company is well-positioned to achieve its goals, ensuring that the coming years will be pivotal for both its export and domestic market strategies.

Conclusion: A Promising Horizon for Skoda Auto India

Skoda Auto India’s commitment to expanding its export footprint, combined with its strong domestic sales growth and strategic product launches, showcases the company’s determination to enhance its global position. The launch of the new Kodiaq SUV and the expansion into new markets like Vietnam underline the brand’s evolving strategy to cater to diverse global needs. As the company continues to push for growth in both domestic and international markets, Skoda Auto India’s focus on high-quality, localized vehicles will be key to its success in the coming years.
