Skoda Charts Aggressive Growth Path in India with Focus on SUVs, CNG, and Pre-Owned Market Expansion

Skoda Auto is setting ambitious goals for its Indian operations in 2025, with plans to double its annual vehicle sales, scale its pre-owned business, and expand into alternative fuel options such as compressed natural gas (CNG). Having sold approximately 36,000 units in India last year, the Czech carmaker is banking on its newly launched compact SUV and a significantly bolstered dealer network to drive momentum. The company is also eyeing rural and semi-urban markets, where a surge in first-time buyers presents fresh opportunities for growth. In parallel, Skoda is exploring a domestically manufactured electric vehicle to strengthen its portfolio in a transitioning auto market.

Compact SUVs to Anchor Skoda’s Growth Ambitions

At the heart of Skoda’s renewed strategy lies its expanded SUV lineup, including the recently introduced compact SUV model that is expected to contribute significantly to sales volumes. With India's passenger vehicle market increasingly tilted towards SUVs, Skoda’s focus is well-aligned with consumer preferences. The brand’s market share has already climbed from under 1% to around 1.8% within a year, and executives project it could reach between 2.5% and 3% by the end of 2025.

Ashish Gupta, Brand Director of Skoda Auto India, emphasized the pivotal role the SUV portfolio—particularly the new Kylaq model—will play in reshaping the company’s presence in a competitive market. The brand’s current ranking in India’s passenger vehicle space has improved from 11th to 7th, and it now aims to consolidate that position.

Sales Network Expansion Targets 350 Touchpoints

To support the anticipated surge in demand, Skoda plans to increase its retail footprint across India. The company is on track to grow its network from 296 touchpoints to around 350 by the year’s end. A large portion of this expansion is focused on semi-urban and rural areas, which now account for approximately 60–65% of Skoda’s dealership base.

This strategic emphasis on tier-2 and tier-3 cities reflects the automaker’s effort to tap into emerging consumer segments and reduce its historical reliance on metropolitan demand. It also positions the company to better service customers in regions where brand accessibility had previously been a constraint.

Pre-Owned Vehicle Business Set for Major Push

Skoda is also investing in the scalability of its certified pre-owned vehicle business, an area it sees as essential to building brand affinity and attracting cost-conscious, first-time buyers. Currently, nearly 80% of Skoda’s dealership facilities are equipped to manage pre-owned sales. The brand processes about 3,000 such transactions annually but aims to nearly triple that number by the end of this year.

This move is expected to serve as a feeder funnel into the new car business. By building trust and affordability into the ownership journey, especially in price-sensitive markets, Skoda is laying the groundwork for long-term brand loyalty.

Entry into the CNG Segment and Electric Vehicle Plans

In a move that signals responsiveness to evolving fuel preferences in India, Skoda is actively evaluating an entry into the CNG vehicle segment. While no official launch timeline has been disclosed, Gupta confirmed that multiple powertrain options are under review to maintain market relevance. CNG is especially appealing in cost-sensitive segments and could offer Skoda a way to cater to buyers who prioritize fuel economy.

Meanwhile, Skoda is also exploring a localized electric vehicle offering, suggesting a broader commitment to sustainability and alignment with the Indian government’s push for cleaner transportation solutions. A domestically produced EV would allow the company to price competitively and potentially qualify for government incentives, giving it an edge in the fast-evolving electric mobility landscape.

Conclusion: A Bold Blueprint for Market Relevance

Skoda’s multi-pronged growth strategy in India—spanning new product launches, dealership expansion, and diversification into pre-owned, CNG, and EV segments—represents a robust playbook for long-term success in one of the world’s most dynamic automotive markets. By aligning its offerings with local demand patterns and expanding its footprint into semi-urban geographies, the company is preparing to compete aggressively against entrenched rivals.
