Spencer’s Retail Reports Reduced Loss Amid Strategic Restructuring and Operational Focus

Spencer’s Retail Ltd posted a narrower consolidated net loss of Rs 68.40 crore for the March quarter of FY25, an improvement over the Rs 80.69 crore loss recorded in the same period last year. The company experienced a 23.22% decline in total income to Rs 423.13 crore, impacted primarily by the closure of 47 underperforming stores in the previous quarter. Despite revenue slipping to Rs 411.87 crore, significant cost optimization efforts helped lower total expenses by 22.2%. Chairman Shashwat Goenka highlighted a fourfold EBITDA improvement driven by strategic focus on key markets, setting the stage for future growth across Spencer’s and Natures Basket brands.

Strategic Store Closures and Revenue Impact

Spencer’s Retail’s topline contraction is chiefly attributed to the shuttering of 47 outlets during Q2, reflecting a conscious pivot toward concentrating on profitable regions. This deliberate reduction in footprint led to a 24.7% decline in revenue from operations in the March quarter to Rs 411.87 crore, down from Rs 546.79 crore in the corresponding period last year. The company’s total income, which includes other revenue streams, contracted by 23.22% to Rs 423.13 crore.

Cost Rationalization Drives Margin Recovery

Despite top-line pressure, Spencer’s demonstrated effective cost containment, reducing total expenses by 22.2% to Rs 491.60 crore in the quarter. This expense discipline, coupled with strategic operational refinements, contributed to a notable contraction in net losses from Rs 80.69 crore in Q4 FY24 to Rs 68.40 crore in Q4 FY25.

For the full fiscal year, Spencer’s trimmed its net loss to Rs 246.36 crore from Rs 266.15 crore a year earlier, while total income declined to Rs 2,098.72 crore against Rs 2,370.62 crore previously. The company’s Chairman, Shashwat Goenka, emphasized that the operational improvements in the second half of FY25 were a direct outcome of its strategic focus on selective geographies and efficiency optimization.

Growth Prospects and Digital Expansion

Looking forward, Spencer’s plans to leverage the momentum built through restructuring to fuel growth across both offline and online channels. This includes strengthening the Natures Basket brand alongside Spencer’s core retail operations.

A significant highlight is the expansion of its quick delivery service, JIFFY, which launched in Kolkata in January. The platform has witnessed robust growth in both order volume and active user base. Plans are underway to extend this service to additional cities in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal during the current fiscal year, aligning with the growing consumer demand for convenience and faster delivery.

Currently, Spencer’s, combined with Natures Basket, operates 89 stores nationwide, underscoring a leaner but more focused retail network.

Market Reaction and Outlook

Shares of Spencer’s Retail closed marginally down by 0.02% to Rs 65.51 on the Bombay Stock Exchange, reflecting cautious investor sentiment despite operational improvements.

The company’s disciplined approach to rationalizing its retail presence, combined with investments in digital capabilities like JIFFY, positions it well to navigate the competitive retail sector. The enhanced EBITDA performance in FY25 signals a promising trajectory towards sustained profitability as the company balances scale with profitability.

Conclusion

Spencer’s Retail’s FY25 results reflect a transformative year marked by strategic recalibration and operational efficiency. While revenue headwinds persist due to store closures, the focus on key markets and digital innovation offers a credible pathway to growth and profitability. Stakeholders will be watching closely as Spencer’s executes its vision to strengthen its position in India’s evolving retail landscape.
