Sunjay Kapur, a prominent London-based industrialist and Chairman of automotive tech firm Sona Comstar, passed away at age 53 on June 12 following a suspected cardiac arrest during a polo match in Windsor, reportedly triggered by the accidental ingestion of a bee. Kapur, formerly married to actor Karisma Kapoor, leaves behind a Rs. 10,300 crore fortune and a global business valued at approximately Rs. 31,000 crore. As the debate over inheritance unfolds, his company reassures stakeholders of continued operations while his sisters are expected to assume leadership roles. His remains are to be repatriated to India for final rites in Delhi.

A Sudden and Tragic Demise

On June 12, business tycoon Sunjay Kapur died unexpectedly while participating in a polo match at Smith's Lawn in Windsor, London. The 53-year-old reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest, which may have been triggered by the accidental ingestion of a bee. The incident has stunned both the business community and his extensive social circles. Known for his affable public image and polished boardroom presence, Kapur was not only a corporate magnate but also a familiar figure in India’s celebrity pages due to his former marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor.

The Business Legacy: Sona Comstar

Sunjay Kapur held the position of Chairman at Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd. (Sona Comstar)—an Indian automotive technology enterprise with a global market capitalization nearing USD 4 billion (approximately Rs. 31,000 crore). Under his leadership, Sona Comstar became a significant supplier of high-precision components for electric vehicles and internal combustion engines alike, serving clients across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Kapur’s demise raised immediate questions about the future of the company’s governance. However, in a prompt statement, the company assured stakeholders:

“We assure our customers, business partners, employees, and shareholders that our operations and prospects remain unchanged as we honour his legacy.”

While no member of the next generation is currently expected to take the helm, reports suggest that his sisters may step into leadership roles to carry forward the corporate legacy, though the firm has yet to officially confirm any succession plans.

Personal Life and Family Arrangements

Sunjay Kapur’s personal life often intersected with public discourse due to his high-profile relationships. His first marriage was to actor Karisma Kapoor in 2003. The couple divorced in 2016, sharing two children—Samaira and Kiaan—and maintaining a cordial relationship post-separation for their children’s welfare.

Following the divorce, Kapur married entrepreneur and former model Priya Sachdev, with whom he had a third child, Azarias. As per inheritance law and legal arrangements in place, Priya Sachdev is expected to manage Kapur’s estate. However, his earlier commitment to his children was well-documented.

Structured Financial Provision for Children

Notably, in 2016, around the time of his divorce, Sunjay Kapur allocated financial assets worth Rs. 14 crore in bonds for his children with Karisma. Additionally, he ensured a monthly income of Rs. 10 lakh for their upbringing. He also transferred ownership of his father’s residence to Karisma Kapoor as part of the divorce settlement. These structured provisions appear to have preemptively addressed potential inheritance disputes and demonstrated Kapur’s long-term commitment to both families.

Repatriation and Final Rites

Despite his long-standing business presence in India, Sunjay Kapur was reportedly a United States citizen. At present, administrative formalities are underway to repatriate his mortal remains to Delhi, where his final rites are expected to be performed. The news of his death has sent ripples across both the Indian business world and international investor communities.

Looking Ahead: Continuity Amid Loss

While the void left by Sunjay Kapur’s passing is immeasurable, his methodical planning—both in business and family affairs—provides a framework for continuity. His legacy lives on not just in the Rs. 10,300 crore personal fortune or in Sona Comstar’s Rs. 31,000 crore valuation, but also in the structured stability he attempted to build for his children and enterprises. His unexpected demise serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life, even for those commanding empires.

As his family prepares for the rituals of farewell, the corporate world watches closely to see how Sona Comstar and the Kapur estate transition into their post-Sunjay era.
