Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has forged a long-term strategic alliance with Denmark-based Salling Group, one of Europe’s largest retail conglomerates, to facilitate a comprehensive digital transformation and cloud migration strategy. The collaboration spans over 2,100 stores and 68,000 employees across six countries, aiming to modernize infrastructure, enhance e-commerce capabilities, and boost operational agility. Leveraging its AI-enabled platform, Cloud Exponence, TCS will support hybrid cloud operations and drive efficiency across Salling Group’s diverse retail formats. This move aligns with Salling’s “Aspire 28” strategy, focused on growth through digital innovation, geographic expansion, and sustainable practices.

A Pan-European Partnership to Reimagine Retail

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of the world’s foremost IT services firms, has entered into a multi-year strategic partnership with Salling Group, Denmark’s largest retail organization, to spearhead a transformative digital initiative. The agreement is set to overhaul the retailer’s operational backbone, touching every facet from infrastructure and cloud services to e-commerce responsiveness and sustainability efforts.

Salling Group operates across Denmark, Poland, Germany, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia, managing over 2,100 outlets and employing more than 68,000 people. Its portfolio includes household retail names such as føtex, Bilka, Netto, RIMI Baltic, toy retailer BR, and franchise operations of Carl’s Jr. and Starbucks.

The Scope: Cloud Migration and Operational Modernization

Under the terms of the partnership, TCS will lead the cloud adoption strategy for Salling Group, using its proprietary AI-powered cloud operations suite, Cloud Exponence. This tool will enable smart managed services across hybrid cloud environments—bringing increased efficiency, flexibility, and scalability to the retailer’s tech infrastructure.

The cloud migration is expected to significantly improve Salling’s digital resilience and operational agility, allowing faster integration of new technologies, better data handling, and a more responsive IT framework.

"At TCS, we are committed to enabling future-ready enterprises," said a senior executive close to the development. “Salling Group’s ambition to modernize its operations at scale aligns perfectly with our capabilities in AI, cloud, and digital transformation.”

A Strategic Boost to “Aspire 28” Vision

This collaboration also reinforces Salling Group’s broader strategic plan, dubbed “Aspire 28,” which envisions expanded retail footprints, mergers, and acquisitions across existing and new geographies. The technological modernization will underpin these growth ambitions by delivering digital scalability and operational resilience.

Alan Jensen, Chief Information Officer at Salling Group, remarked, “At Salling Group, everything we do is ultimately to make our customers’ lives better. This project is no exception. Our partnership with TCS enhances our capacity to respond to evolving consumer needs in a responsible and sustainable way.”

By partnering with a global IT leader, Salling aims to sharpen its competitive edge and lay the groundwork for future expansion.

Enhancing Consumer Experience Through E-Commerce Transformation

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the alliance will also target significant improvements in the e-commerce ecosystem. With retail increasingly driven by omnichannel engagement and personalized user experience, Salling is positioning itself to meet these expectations through faster, more intelligent digital platforms.

TCS will integrate its cloud-native tools to make Salling’s online retail experiences more adaptive, intuitive, and aligned with consumer trends in real-time. This is especially crucial as retail ecosystems shift toward hyper-personalization and frictionless digital journeys.

Driving Sustainability with Technology

Sustainability is a key pillar of the partnership, with both companies committed to embedding environmental responsibility into their operations. TCS’s cloud solutions are designed to reduce energy consumption and minimize the carbon footprint associated with legacy systems.

The focus on scalable, energy-efficient infrastructure reflects a growing trend in retail where digital transformation is not only about cost savings and performance, but also about meeting ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals.

Conclusion: A Digital Blueprint for Retail’s Next Chapter

This partnership between TCS and Salling Group underscores the rising importance of technological innovation in traditional retail models. From AI-driven cloud frameworks to sustainable, consumer-first digital strategies, the alliance lays out a blueprint for how global retail can adapt and thrive amid economic, environmental, and technological shifts.

As both companies move forward with implementation, the collaboration stands as a case study in how legacy retailers can reinvent themselves through the right technological partnerships—without losing sight of customer centricity and long-term value creation.
