In May 2025, Toyota Kirloskar Motor posted a notable sales figure of 30,864 units, marking a significant 22% year-on-year increase. With 29,280 units sold domestically and 1,584 units exported, the company saw substantial growth in its SUV and MPV segments. The Fortuner and Legender, along with the success of badge-engineered models such as the Glanza and Rumion, have contributed greatly to the surge. A key highlight is the introduction of the Innova HyCross Exclusive Edition, which offers multiple upgrades. Cumulatively, Toyota’s performance in the first two months of FY 2025 is up by 27%.

Toyota's Impressive Growth in May 2025: A 22% Increase in Sales

In May 2025, Toyota Kirloskar Motor achieved a remarkable milestone, recording a total of 30,864 units sold, representing a 22% increase in sales compared to May 2024. This surge reflects Toyota's continued momentum in the Indian market, where it has successfully capitalized on a growing demand for SUVs and MPVs. The strong performance was driven largely by domestic sales, with 29,280 units sold within India, while the remaining 1,584 units were exported.

Cumulative Performance: A Strong Start to FY 2025

Looking at the broader fiscal performance, Toyota’s cumulative sales for April and May 2025 amounted to 58,188 units, showcasing a robust 27% increase compared to the same period in FY 2024–25, which had seen 45,767 units. This growth trajectory suggests that Toyota is well-positioned to meet its annual targets and continue gaining market share in a highly competitive automotive landscape.

SUVs and MPVs: The Backbone of Toyota’s Growth

The surge in sales can largely be attributed to Toyota’s success in the SUV and MPV segments, both of which have experienced impressive growth in 2025. Combined volumes for these categories in the first two months of the fiscal year are up by 34%, a clear indication of the increasing consumer preference for larger, more versatile vehicles.

At the forefront of this growth are two premium SUVs—the Fortuner and the Legender—which have become household names in India. The Fortuner, in particular, remains one of the most popular SUVs in the country, continuing to drive Toyota's premium SUV market share. Together, the Fortuner and Legender have surpassed the significant milestone of 3 lakh units in sales, solidifying their position as the flagship models in Toyota's SUV lineup.

The Rise of Badge-Engineered Models

Toyota’s badge-engineered models, which are based on vehicles from other manufacturers, have also contributed substantially to the company’s growth in India. The Toyota Glanza, based on the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, continues to perform well, catering to the growing demand for affordable yet premium compact hatchbacks. Similarly, the Rumion, based on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, and the Taisor, based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, have been key contributors to the company's success in the mass-market segments.

These badge-engineered models enable Toyota to leverage existing platforms while introducing its own value-added features, appealing to a broader segment of consumers who seek reliability, comfort, and a premium ownership experience.

Innova HyCross Exclusive Edition: Enhancing the MPV Lineup

One of the most notable introductions in Toyota’s MPV range this year is the Innova HyCross Exclusive Edition. While the core model remains immensely popular, the new Exclusive Edition adds 19 updates, primarily cosmetic and feature-based, further enhancing its appeal. These modifications offer a refreshed look and feel, along with new features designed to elevate the overall customer experience. This strategic addition aims to cater to the evolving preferences of Indian consumers, who are increasingly seeking premium features in their vehicles.

Looking Ahead: Toyota’s Stronghold in the Indian Market

With the introduction of updated models and a clear focus on the SUV and MPV segments, Toyota is well-positioned to continue its success in the Indian automotive market. The company’s strategic blend of premium offerings, mass-market models, and timely product upgrades has been crucial in maintaining its competitive edge.

Toyota’s growth trajectory in May 2025 underscores the brand’s ability to adapt to the changing preferences of Indian consumers, while its reputation for reliability and innovation continues to resonate with buyers. As the year progresses, Toyota’s continued focus on product innovation, coupled with its strong presence in key segments, should ensure that it remains a dominant player in India’s highly competitive automotive industry.
