India’s Coal Imports Drop Nearly 8% in FY25, Saving Over Rs. 60,000 Crore in Foreign Exchange

India's coal imports fell by 7.9% to 243.62 million tonnes (MT) in FY25, down from 264.53 MT in the previous fiscal year, resulting in substantial foreign exchange savings of approximately USD 7.93 billion (Rs. 60,681.67 crore). This significant decline aligns with the country’s strategic emphasis on enhancing domestic coal production and reducing external dependency. Despite a modest increase in coal-based power generation, the import of coal for blending in thermal plants fell sharply by over 41%.
