Rupee Hits Record Low at Rs. 88.27 Against Dollar Amid Tariff Woes and Capital Outflows

The Indian rupee fell to an unprecedented Rs. 88.27 per U.S. dollar on September 5, 2025, marking its weakest close to date. The depreciation was driven by persistent foreign capital outflows, heightened uncertainty over U.S. tariff measures, and jittery investor sentiment. While easing crude oil prices and a softer dollar index provided some cushion, they failed to counterbalance the strong selling pressure. The Reserve Bank of India intervened through state-run banks to limit further losses.

Indian equity benchmarks delivered a muted close on September 5, 2025, with the BSE Sensex finishing at Rs. 80,710.76, down 7.25 points (0.01%), while the Nifty 50 edged up 6.70 points (0.03%) to 24,741.00. Intraday volatility was pronounced, with early gains from reform-led enthusiasm countered by profit-booking in IT and consumer sectors. Auto and metal counters offered support, but defensive selling capped the upside.
