Google Launches Safety Engineering Centre in India to Bolster Cybersecurity and Responsible AI in APAC

In a landmark move aimed at fortifying cybersecurity and digital trust in the Asia-Pacific region, Google has inaugurated the Google Safety Engineering Centre (GSEC) in Hyderabad, India. This facility—Google’s first of its kind in APAC and fourth globally—signals the tech giant’s deepening investment in India’s digital ecosystem. Unveiled by Telangana Chief Minister Anumula Revanth Reddy, GSEC India will spearhead innovation in online safety, privacy engineering, and responsible AI development. The centre is designed to serve as a strategic hub that will not only safeguard Indian users but also drive scalable security solutions for the broader region.

GSEC India: A Regional Safety Powerhouse

GSEC India has been positioned as a pivotal operational base where Google’s global cybersecurity ambitions intersect with India’s fast-evolving digital landscape. As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, this centre will unify expertise in privacy, security, and threat mitigation under a single framework tailored to regional needs.

Located in Hyderabad, the centre is expected to become the backbone of Google's cybersecurity initiatives in Asia-Pacific, drawing on India’s robust tech talent and rising digital influence. It will foster cross-functional collaboration, with engineering teams working on everything from end-user protection to enterprise-grade infrastructure security.

Strategic Focus Areas

The newly launched centre will operationalize three foundational pillars from Google’s global Safety Charter:

  1. Protection from Online Scams and Fraud:
GSEC India will focus on developing technologies and strategies to combat cyber fraud, phishing attacks, and digital misinformation—key threats in India’s rapidly digitizing economy.
  2. Securing Government and Enterprise Infrastructure:
The centre will assist in hardening the cybersecurity frameworks used by government bodies and private enterprises, aligning with national digital transformation goals.
  3. Responsible AI Development:
GSEC India will also function as a nucleus for research and deployment of ethical AI practices, ensuring that innovations respect privacy, fairness, and transparency principles.

This triad of focus areas reflects Google’s broader ambition of reinforcing trust in technology while ensuring the benefits of digitization reach all users securely.

Telangana’s Role in India’s Tech Evolution

Telangana’s proactive approach to technology adoption and innovation made it a natural choice for GSEC India. At the inauguration, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasized the state’s readiness to support global technology leaders and its ambition to become a cybersecurity hub for the region. IT Minister D Sridhar Babu echoed these sentiments, highlighting the government’s commitment to public-private partnerships that safeguard digital infrastructure.

Hyderabad’s growing stature as an R&D hotspot further strengthens its appeal for companies like Google that are seeking to anchor high-impact operations in a city with a skilled workforce and supportive policy environment.

A Regional Centre with Global Impact

While GSEC India’s immediate focus is on India's unique digital needs, its long-term vision extends far beyond national borders. As the digital gateway to South and Southeast Asia, India offers an ideal springboard for scalable safety and security solutions that can be applied across emerging and developed markets alike.

By consolidating expertise and infrastructure in Hyderabad, Google is not only responding to pressing cybersecurity challenges but also investing in the future of secure, inclusive, and transparent digital growth throughout the Asia-Pacific.
