Himadri Speciality, a key player in the clean-tech space, has made a strategic move to strengthen its footprint in the energy storage and mobility sectors by acquiring a 16.24% stake in International Battery Company (IBC). The USD 4.43 million (approximately Rs. 37.47 crore) investment gives Himadri board representation and access to cutting-edge lithium-ion battery technologies. With IBC operating a South Korea-based battery facility and building a major gigafactory in Bengaluru, this partnership is expected to bolster India’s clean energy transition and position Himadri as a significant contributor to the global sustainable energy ecosystem.

Strategic Expansion into Energy Storage and Mobility

In a decisive step toward reinforcing its clean-tech ambitions, Himadri Speciality has announced the acquisition of a 16.24% stake in International Battery Company (IBC), a U.S.-based developer of advanced lithium-ion battery technologies. The investment, valued at approximately Rs. 37.47 crore (USD 4.43 million), was executed through a combination of preferred and common equity.

This capital infusion secures Himadri a seat at IBC’s board table, giving the company strategic influence and deeper integration into the rapidly evolving landscape of global battery innovation. The deal marks Himadri’s formal entry into the lithium-ion battery (LiB) materials market, a sector viewed as critical to the global shift toward electric mobility and renewable energy.

Building a Global Battery Ecosystem

International Battery Company currently operates a 50 MWh lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility in South Korea and is actively developing a large-scale gigafactory in Bengaluru, India. This Indian facility, a joint venture with Mahanagar Gas Limited, is scheduled to become operational in the final quarter of FY2025–26.

The Bengaluru plant is designed to supply high-performance battery solutions for India's growing fleet electrification market, particularly targeting last-mile B2B logistics and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the two- and three-wheeler segments. It will also serve as an export hub for battery cells, reinforcing India’s emerging position in the global battery supply chain.

Aligning with the Clean Energy Megatrend

Anurag Choudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of Himadri Speciality, emphasized that the investment reflects the company’s long-term commitment to clean energy technologies. “This partnership marks a pivotal step in Himadri's global clean-tech strategy and our entry into the LiB component materials market,” he said.

Choudhary highlighted that the collaboration with IBC is a fusion of Himadri’s deep material science capabilities with IBC’s advanced battery innovations. “Together, we are building a scalable, high-impact ecosystem that will power the next wave of clean mobility and energy solutions not only in India but across the globe,” he added.

Positioning for the Future of Energy

The strategic alliance positions both companies at the forefront of a high-growth sector. Global demand for energy storage and electric mobility solutions is accelerating, fueled by decarbonization targets, regulatory incentives, and consumer adoption. Himadri’s investment in IBC is therefore not just a financial transaction, but a calculated move to participate in one of the most transformative industrial shifts of the 21st century.

By investing in a company with an operational presence in Asia and manufacturing ambitions in India, Himadri is effectively aligning its growth trajectory with national energy goals and international sustainability imperatives.

Conclusion

Himadri Speciality’s investment in International Battery Company underscores its strategic foresight and readiness to engage with the technological vanguard of clean energy. As lithium-ion batteries become foundational to everything from electric vehicles to grid-level storage, this partnership sets the stage for Himadri to evolve from a specialty chemicals firm into a central player in the global energy transition.

With an eye on scalable impact and global relevance, Himadri’s move could help shape the future of energy infrastructure in both developed and emerging markets.
