Tripura Unveils Eco Park Expansion Plan to Elevate Sustainable Tourism

By Gurminder Mangat , 7 August 2025

In a bid to transform its natural assets into a thriving tourism sector, Tripura has announced a strategic expansion of its eco parks to draw both domestic and international visitors. The initiative is part of the state’s broader vision to strengthen sustainable development while conserving biodiversity and supporting rural livelihoods. With new infrastructure, improved connectivity, and eco-friendly activities, the state government aims to position Tripura as a leading destination for nature-based tourism in the Northeast. This approach also aligns with India's national agenda on climate-conscious growth and regional economic diversification.

Eco Tourism at the Forefront of Tripura’s Development Agenda

Tripura, often overshadowed by more prominent travel destinations in India, is charting an ambitious path toward sustainable tourism by capitalizing on its natural beauty and ecological diversity. The state government is investing significantly in the creation and revitalization of eco parks, envisioning them as key drivers of regional development and environmental stewardship.

These eco parks are designed to offer visitors immersive nature experiences—ranging from forest treks and birdwatching to cultural showcases and wellness retreats—while simultaneously safeguarding sensitive ecosystems.

Key Parks and Projects Underway

Among the most prominent developments is the revamping of Sepahijala and Trishna Wildlife Sanctuaries, both of which will feature upgraded infrastructure, interpretation centers, and guided eco-trails. The newly proposed Gandacherra Eco Park, expected to span over several hectares, will serve as a flagship destination combining conservation, education, and recreation.

Other parks in areas such as Baramura and Unakoti are being enhanced with sustainable amenities including solar lighting, rainwater harvesting systems, and organic food kiosks sourced from local communities.

These efforts are being supported under state and central government schemes, including the Swadesh Darshan and North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), providing a financial backbone to the projects.

Tourism Meets Climate Responsibility

What sets Tripura’s approach apart is its focus on balancing ecological integrity with tourism expansion. Authorities are placing strong emphasis on low-impact design, renewable energy integration, and biodiversity protection. No large-scale commercial construction will be allowed within protected zones, and visitor capacities will be strictly regulated to prevent overcrowding.

Educational components such as biodiversity workshops, community-run nature trails, and awareness campaigns on local flora and fauna are being built into each park's offerings. This not only enhances the visitor experience but fosters a culture of conservation among travelers and locals alike.

Boost to Local Economy and Employment

With eco parks acting as economic engines, the initiative is expected to generate thousands of employment opportunities, particularly for tribal and rural populations. From guides and hospitality staff to artisans and food producers, a wide cross-section of the population stands to benefit.

Self-help groups and local cooperatives are also being mobilized to provide services within the parks, ensuring that tourism revenue circulates within the community. Officials have indicated that nearly 80% of park-based businesses will be managed by local stakeholders, reinforcing the model of inclusive growth.

Strategic Connectivity and Marketing Push

In parallel with ecological development, Tripura is accelerating road, rail, and air connectivity to improve accessibility to remote eco-tourism sites. The expansion of the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport and better road links to interior regions are expected to support higher tourist inflows without compromising environmental thresholds.

A nationwide promotional campaign is also in the works, aimed at positioning Tripura as a "green escape" for urban dwellers and nature lovers. Targeted outreach to eco-conscious travelers, students, researchers, and wellness tourists is central to this effort.

A Model for the Northeast and Beyond

Tripura’s eco park initiative arrives at a pivotal moment when the global tourism sector is increasingly pivoting toward sustainability and climate resilience. If implemented effectively, the state could serve as a model for how low-footprint tourism can thrive in ecologically sensitive areas.

By blending policy innovation, grassroots participation, and conservation science, Tripura is not just redefining tourism in the Northeast—it’s laying the groundwork for a new kind of development, where nature and progress go hand in hand.
