India’s Railways Accelerates Modernisation with Landmark Gati Shakti Terminal and Fleet Expansion

By Vinod Pathak , 18 June 2025

India’s railway infrastructure is entering a transformative phase with the inauguration of the country’s largest automobile Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant. This state-of-the-art facility, featuring a high-capacity rail link and a 4.5 lakh vehicle per annum loading capacity, is set to redefine automotive logistics. At the same event, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled sweeping operational reforms and expansion plans—from augmenting MEMU trains to expanding Namo Bharat and Amrit Bharat fleets. Coupled with historic freight figures and the digitisation of ticketing systems, Indian Railways is positioning itself as a global logistics and mobility powerhouse.

A Strategic Leap in Logistics: Manesar Gati Shakti Terminal

In a significant boost to India’s transportation and logistics ecosystem, the Ministry of Railways inaugurated a dedicated multi-modal cargo terminal at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd’s Manesar plant in Haryana. The facility is now the largest automobile-focused Gati Shakti terminal in the country.

Built with an investment of Rs. 800 crore, this infrastructure project includes a 10 km dedicated rail corridor connecting the Maruti plant to Patli railway station. The link is part of the larger 121.7 km Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor spearheaded by the Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDC). HRIDC contributed Rs. 684 crore to the project, while the remaining funding came from Maruti Suzuki.

With an annual loading capacity of 4.5 lakh vehicles, the terminal aims to streamline outbound automobile logistics, cutting costs, reducing road congestion, and enhancing multimodal transport efficiency. This marks a significant win for India's ‘Make in India’ and Gati Shakti missions.

Fleet Expansion: MEMU, Namo Bharat, and Amrit Bharat Trains

Alongside logistics enhancement, Indian Railways is aggressively scaling its passenger transport capabilities. In his address, Vaishnaw announced plans to expand Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains, increasing their capacity from the current 8–12 coach configuration to 16–20 coaches. This initiative is designed to cater to short-distance commuters, particularly in high-density corridors.

To meet growing demand, a new manufacturing facility has been commissioned at Kazipet, Andhra Pradesh, which will produce over 100 MEMU rakes.

The minister also highlighted the expansion of the semi-high-speed Namo Bharat trains. Following their successful debut, 50 more units are slated for production, aiming to provide efficient, modern rail options to urban and intercity travellers.

Furthermore, the rollout of Amrit Bharat trains continues. Currently, three units are operational and have garnered strong public approval. Six additional trains are scheduled to be launched in the near term, and the production of another 50 is underway. These trains are intended to enhance long-distance travel with improved amenities, faster speeds, and safer operations.

Record-Setting Freight and Passenger Performance

India’s Railways recorded remarkable operational metrics in FY 2023–24. Approximately 720 crore passengers were transported during the year, alongside 1,617 million tonnes of freight. This impressive freight volume earned Indian Railways the distinction of being the second-largest freight carrier globally for the fiscal year—an achievement underscoring its growing international competitiveness.

This performance is particularly notable given the structural and capacity limitations Indian Railways has been working to overcome. Strategic investments in terminals, manufacturing, and modern rolling stock are now translating into tangible outcomes.

Tatkal Reforms and Digitisation Push

In a move aimed at curbing misuse and enhancing the transparency of ticket bookings, Vaishnaw announced that starting July 1, 2025, Tatkal tickets will only be bookable by Aadhaar-authenticated and KYC-verified users during the first 30 minutes of the booking window. This reform is expected to increase the availability of tickets for genuine passengers while reducing the scope for exploitation by agents and bots.

In parallel, Indian Railways is testing a digital overhaul in the Bikaner Division, where passenger reservation charts are now being prepared 24 hours in advance—compared to the existing four-hour timeline. If successful, this pilot project could set a new nationwide standard for passenger convenience and trip planning.

Coach Manufacturing Capacity Gets a Boost

To support the ambitious train production agenda, the Railway Coach Factory in Sonipat is undergoing a comprehensive modernisation process. Once completed, the upgraded facility is expected to significantly expand the Indian Railways’ rolling stock output and improve the quality and safety standards of the fleet.

This development, aligned with the broader goals of the ‘Vande Bharat’ and ‘Amrit Bharat’ missions, is central to building a self-reliant and globally competitive railway manufacturing ecosystem.

Conclusion: Towards a Smarter, Faster, Greener Rail Network

The unveiling of the Manesar Gati Shakti terminal, coupled with expansive plans for fleet augmentation and digital transformation, signals Indian Railways’ strategic intent to become a world-class mobility and logistics platform. As India continues to urbanise and industrialise, these investments not only improve the movement of goods and people but also play a crucial role in boosting economic productivity and sustainability.

With an eye on long-term capacity and efficiency gains, the Railways’ blueprint balances immediate operational upgrades with future-facing infrastructure and technology innovations—laying the tracks for a truly integrated and resilient national transport network.
