Centre, ICAR Seal Rs. 21 Crore Agreement to Advance Nano Urea Assessment

In a strategic push toward sustainable agriculture, the Indian government has signed a Rs. 21 crore memorandum of understanding with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to conduct an extensive evaluation of nano urea, an emerging fertilizer technology aimed at improving nutrient efficiency and reducing environmental harm. The collaboration will involve large-scale field trials, soil impact studies, and performance assessments across varied climatic zones. As India intensifies efforts to modernize farming practices and curb dependence on chemical fertilizers, the initiative positions nano urea as a potential game-changer—pending scientific validation—within the country’s evolving agricultural ecosystem.

Government Partners with ICAR to Strengthen Fertilizer Innovation

The newly formalized MoU reflects a deliberate shift toward evidence-based agricultural reforms. With an allocation of Rs. 21 crore, the government has empowered ICAR to lead a comprehensive, multi-dimensional evaluation of nano urea’s agronomic value. The partnership underscores national priorities centered on improving crop productivity, reducing fertilizer misuse, and fostering technological advancements in the farm sector.

Understanding Nano Urea and Its Potential

Nano urea is engineered as a high-efficiency nitrogen source designed to replace conventional urea at significantly lower application rates. Developed using nanotechnology, the product aims to enhance nutrient absorption while minimizing wastage typically associated with granular fertilizers. Traditional urea often results in high nitrogen loss—through volatilization, leaching, and runoff—which contributes to soil depletion and environmental pollution.

If validated through the upcoming assessment, nano urea could support India’s goals of reducing fertilizer subsidies, improving nutrient use efficiency, and adopting more climate-resilient agricultural solutions.

Scope of the Scientific Evaluation

Under the agreement, ICAR will implement a wide-ranging research framework that includes field trials across major crop varieties and agroclimatic regions.
