Delhi Airport Trials Seamless Baggage Transfer System to Enhance Passenger Connectivity

By Kirti Srinivasan , 13 April 2025

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the operator of India’s busiest aviation hub, is initiating trials to automate cabin baggage transfers between Terminal 3 (T3) and Terminal 1 (T1), aiming to ease the experience for international travelers with domestic connections. The effort is part of a broader push to enhance inter-terminal connectivity, reduce transit fatigue, and streamline baggage logistics across terminals. With Terminal 2 (T2) temporarily closing for maintenance, DIAL is reinforcing its infrastructure and working closely with airline partners and regulatory authorities to ensure smoother passenger flow across terminals, including advanced security screening upgrades and metro check-in revamps.

Improving Baggage Flow: From Manual to Managed

Under current protocols, passengers arriving from international destinations must claim their baggage, clear customs at T3, and then manually transfer their luggage to T1 for their domestic flights. This cumbersome process not only causes delays but creates confusion—especially for foreign travelers unfamiliar with terminal layouts. DIAL is actively testing a new system that enables travelers to drop their cabin baggage at T3 post-customs, after which airline handlers will transport the baggage via airside to T1. If successful, this process would eliminate the need for road travel with luggage between terminals.

T2 Shutdown Prompts Operational Overhaul

Starting April 15, Terminal 2 will be temporarily decommissioned for scheduled maintenance. All flight operations from T2 will be diverted to T1, resulting in increased passenger load and inter-terminal transfers. In anticipation of potential bottlenecks, DIAL has committed to ensuring that passenger transfer from T1 to T3 will not exceed 120 minutes—a promise made to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. This move reflects the airport’s agility in handling operational shifts while safeguarding passenger experience amid infrastructural upgrades.

"We’ve assured the government that T1 to T3 transit will be completed within two hours," Jaipuriar confirmed during a press briefing.

Metro Check-In Revamp and Future Infrastructure

DIAL is also collaborating with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to enhance the check-in infrastructure at metro stations, a feature currently available at New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium stations. The initiative aims to extend check-in accessibility and ease congestion within the airport premises. By improving the integration of urban mobility with aviation services, DIAL envisions a seamless travel experience right from the city center to the boarding gate.

Security Upgrades: Faster, Smarter Screening

In a forward-looking step toward security modernization, DIAL is also trialing full-body scanners and preparing to deploy Computed Tomography X-Ray (CTX) machines. These technologies are expected to:

  • Reduce frisking time, thereby expediting passenger movement through security checkpoints
  • Enhance accuracy and efficiency in scanning hand baggage
  • Minimize human intervention, improving both safety and user experience

Implications for Investors and Travelers

From a business and investment perspective, DIAL’s operational enhancements and digital infrastructure focus indicate strong fundamentals in long-term airport asset management. In an era where aviation is rebounding post-pandemic, and international air traffic is surging, efficient hub connectivity becomes a key differentiator for global competitiveness. Simultaneously, travelers—particularly those on tight layovers—stand to benefit significantly. A simplified baggage and transfer system means fewer missed connections, reduced physical strain, and an elevated travel experience that aligns with global standards.

Conclusion: A Strategic Step Toward a Smart Airport Ecosystem

Delhi Airport’s ongoing trials and upgrades are more than logistical improvements—they represent a strategic pivot toward integrated, passenger-centric aviation operations. As India cements its place as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, DIAL's ability to modernize transit infrastructure and deploy smart technologies will play a critical role in shaping the country’s future as a global air travel hub.
