Maruti Suzuki Sets New Benchmark with Record Rail Dispatches, Driving Sustainable Automotive Logistics

By Amrita Bhatia , 6 June 2025

Maruti Suzuki India has achieved a landmark in automotive logistics by dispatching 5.18 lakh vehicles via Indian Railways in the fiscal year 2024-25, marking its highest volume to date. Since initiating rail-based vehicle transportation in 2013, the company has cumulatively moved around 24 lakh vehicles through this eco-friendly channel. Serving over 600 cities from more than 20 rail hubs and utilizing key ports for exports, Maruti Suzuki continues to prioritize sustainability. The company’s rail logistics initiative has significantly reduced carbon emissions and fuel consumption, aligning with its strategic goal to increase rail dispatches to 35% by FY 2030-31.

Strategic Expansion of Rail-Based Vehicle Dispatch

Maruti Suzuki’s latest figures reflect a robust expansion of its rail dispatch operations, with 5.18 lakh vehicles transported via Indian Railways during FY 2024-25—an all-time high for the company. This mode of transport now serves as a critical pillar in Maruti Suzuki’s distribution strategy, offering efficient connectivity to more than 600 urban centers across India. The company’s logistics network is anchored by over 20 strategic railway hubs, facilitating streamlined vehicle movement and contributing to the timely delivery of automobiles nationwide.

Sustainability at the Core of Operations

Under the leadership of Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi, Maruti Suzuki has embedded environmental stewardship into its operational framework. Recognized as the first Indian automobile manufacturer to secure an automobile-freight-train-operator license in 2013, the company has since championed rail-based dispatch to minimize its carbon footprint. The 24 lakh vehicles transported by rail since inception have collectively helped reduce carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions by over 1.8 lakh tonnes and conserved more than 63 million litres of fuel. These sustainability achievements underscore Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to balancing business growth with ecological responsibility.

Infrastructure and Capacity Enhancements

Maruti Suzuki’s fleet comprises more than 40 flexi-deck rakes, each capable of transporting approximately 300 vehicles per trip. This capacity expansion enables the automaker to handle increasing dispatch volumes while optimizing logistical efficiency. The company’s use of rail connectivity extends beyond domestic markets, reaching the port terminals of Mundra and Pipavav to support its export operations. This integration of rail freight with maritime export channels demonstrates Maruti Suzuki’s comprehensive and adaptive supply chain management.

Future Outlook: Scaling Rail Dispatch to 35% by 2031

Looking ahead, Maruti Suzuki aims to escalate the share of vehicle dispatches via railways to 35% by the fiscal year 2030-31. This ambitious target reflects a broader industry trend toward sustainable logistics and reduced reliance on road transportation, which is typically more carbon-intensive. Achieving this objective will require continued investment in rail infrastructure, partnerships with Indian Railways, and innovative operational efficiencies. Maruti Suzuki’s vision aligns with global efforts to curb transportation-related emissions, positioning the company as a leader in eco-conscious automotive distribution.

Conclusion

Maruti Suzuki’s record-setting vehicle dispatch through Indian Railways is a testament to its strategic foresight and commitment to sustainable business practices. By leveraging rail infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency and environmental outcomes, the company not only meets growing market demand but also advances India’s broader climate goals. As automotive logistics evolve, Maruti Suzuki’s model offers a compelling blueprint for integrating scalability with sustainability, setting new standards for the industry.
