Reliance Defence, under Anil Ambani's Reliance Group, has entered a significant partnership with German defence giant Rheinmetall AG to establish a state-of-the-art ammunition manufacturing facility in Maharashtra. This collaboration aims to supply artillery shells, explosives, and propellants, aligning with India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. The new greenfield plant will bolster India’s defence production capabilities, enhance self-reliance, and support the country’s ambitious Rs 50,000 crore defence export target by 2029. This alliance also marks Reliance Defence’s continued growth in the private sector defence manufacturing domain, reinforcing its position as a future leader in India’s defence exports.

Strategic Partnership with a Global Defence Powerhouse

Reliance Defence Ltd, promoted by Reliance Infrastructure Ltd, has formalized a strategic agreement with Rheinmetall AG, a Düsseldorf-based global leader in advanced defence technologies. This collaboration marks the third significant defence alliance for Reliance Group, following previous joint ventures with French aerospace leaders Dassault Aviation and Thales. The partnership focuses on the production and supply of explosives and propellants for medium and large calibre ammunition, a critical segment in the evolving defence landscape.

Rheinmetall AG, valued at approximately EUR 80 billion, is renowned for its expertise across a broad spectrum of defence products, including armoured vehicles, infantry fighting vehicles, advanced air defence systems, and cutting-edge ammunition technology. Its flagship product, the Leopard 2A7 main battle tank, is widely regarded as one of the most sophisticated tanks globally.

Enhancing India’s Defence Manufacturing Ecosystem

In line with the government’s emphasis on self-sufficiency and indigenous production, Reliance Defence will establish a new greenfield manufacturing facility in the Watad Industrial Area of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. This facility is poised to become one of South Asia’s largest ammunition manufacturing plants, with an annual production capacity of up to 2,00,000 artillery shells, 10,000 tonnes of explosives, and 2,000 tonnes of propellants.

While financial details of the investment remain undisclosed, the scale of the project underscores Reliance Defence’s ambition to become a pivotal player in India’s defence sector. This manufacturing hub is expected to fortify supply chains, provide critical raw materials access to Rheinmetall, and generate growth avenues for both partners.

Alignment with ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and Export Aspirations

The partnership reflects a shared vision to propel India towards becoming a global defence manufacturing and export powerhouse. The facility is anticipated to significantly contribute to the country’s goal of achieving Rs 50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029, thereby reducing dependence on foreign imports and boosting domestic industry capabilities.

Reliance Defence’s Chairman, Anil D Ambani, emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration, highlighting its transformational potential for India’s private defence manufacturing sector. “This initiative represents a major milestone in our long-term strategy to invest in the rapidly expanding defence manufacturing domain,” Ambani noted.

Rheinmetall’s CEO, Armin Papperger, affirmed the company’s commitment to the Indian market, citing the partnership as a testament to its confidence in India’s growth trajectory under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

The Dhirubhai Ambani Defence City: A Vision for the Future

The ammunition facility is part of the broader Dhirubhai Ambani Defence City (DADC), an integrated project in Ratnagiri designed to house cutting-edge manufacturing for explosives, ammunition, and small arms. When completed, DADC will represent the largest private-sector greenfield defence manufacturing project in India, underscoring the Reliance Group’s resolve to elevate India’s defence production infrastructure.

This venture epitomizes the confluence of indigenous manufacturing capabilities and international technological expertise, positioning India to meet domestic defence requirements and emerge as a prominent exporter in the global defence supply chain.

Conclusion

The Reliance Defence-Rheinmetall partnership embodies a critical step towards strengthening India’s defence manufacturing base and achieving strategic autonomy. By combining Reliance’s local industry insights with Rheinmetall’s advanced technological prowess, the alliance exemplifies the potential of private sector participation in the nation’s defence ambitions. As India pursues self-reliance and global competitiveness in defence exports, such collaborations will be instrumental in shaping the future of the country’s strategic and economic landscape.
