Global HIV Fight at Risk as U.S. Funding Cuts Undermine Progress, Warns UNAIDS Chief

A sharp reduction in U.S. funding for global HIV/AIDS programs under Donald Trump's administration threatens to reverse decades of progress toward ending the epidemic as a public health threat by 2030, warned UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima. Speaking from South Africa—home to the largest HIV-positive population globally—Byanyima underscored the growing impact of shuttered clinics, reduced testing, and dwindling supplies of life-saving treatments. With 1.3 million new infections recorded globally in 2023, the world was already behind on its targets.
