Notably, Prerna Ojas Private Limited, a key partner in the project, has played a vital role in advancing solar energy solutions such as decentralized solar systems, solar product manufacturing, and clean cooking technologies.
In FY2024-25, the government launched a solar manufacturing unit in Lucknow and established 414 solar retail outlets across 20 districts. These retail outlets, which serve as both sales and service centers for solar products, have directly benefited 414 women entrepreneurs. Additionally, 80 solar-powered food processing units, including machines for drying and refrigeration, were installed, empowering 60 women as 'Surya Sakhis,' who are trained to operate solar-based food processing systems.
Building a Solar Energy Ecosystem for Women Entrepreneurs
The government has outlined a robust roadmap to further scale this initiative. In the next three years, Uttar Pradesh plans to establish solar product manufacturing units in each of its 18 divisions, creating employment for 540 women in the production of solar panels, batteries, and other solar technologies. These products will cater to both local demand and regional markets, expanding the reach of solar energy across the state.
Moreover, the state is set to open 3,304 solar retail outlets across 826 development blocks, averaging four shops per block. These outlets will not only serve as hubs for solar product sales but also facilitate the repair and maintenance of solar appliances. Through this expansion, an additional 3,304 women will gain financial independence while contributing to the increasing penetration of solar energy in rural areas.
Decentralized Solar Systems: Enabling Grassroots Entrepreneurship
One of the most exciting elements of this initiative is the deployment of decentralized solar systems. Uttar Pradesh plans to install 20,000 solar-powered systems, including food processing machines, dryers, and refrigerators, across rural areas. These systems will create entrepreneurial opportunities for women, particularly in sectors such as food preservation, where solar-powered appliances will reduce dependence on traditional energy sources.
These solar systems will not only help women establish small-scale businesses but also play a key role in promoting sustainable living. Women entrepreneurs will be able to access affordable, reliable solar-powered equipment, enabling them to run energy-efficient enterprises that align with the state’s green energy goals.
Community-Level Leadership: 'Surya Sakhis' and 'Paryavaran Sakhis'
In addition to the entrepreneurial opportunities, the initiative emphasizes the importance of grassroots leadership in driving clean energy adoption. As part of the program, the state aims to appoint 57,702 'Surya Sakhis'—one in each Gram Panchayat—who will oversee the maintenance, usage, and awareness-building of solar products at the community level. These women will become champions of clean energy, helping to spread knowledge and usage of solar technologies in their villages.
Furthermore, the program's long-term strategy includes training 10,000 'Paryavaran Sakhis' over the next three years. These women will promote clean cooking solutions, such as solar stoves and biogas systems, in rural areas, contributing to healthier homes by reducing indoor air pollution. This will not only improve the well-being of women and children but also encourage the adoption of cleaner, more sustainable lifestyles.
