India is set to undertake its long-delayed population census, beginning in October 2026 in selected northern territories, and nationwide from March 2027. This exercise will be historic—not only because it marks the first census in 16 years—but also due to the government’s inclusion of caste data, a politically and socially significant development. For the first time, citizens will have the opportunity to self-enumerate through digital platforms.
